I've heard that the best time to trim trees is in the winter. I've got three trees that need trimming and shaping. Recommendations for a good tree expert?

We've used Davey's tree trimming service. They did a good job and got through it very quickly. IIRC, they were in the mid-range of the price bids we collected before awarding them the job. At first it seemed like they trimmed too much and the yard looked too barren. But by springtime, everything grew in well and they obviously did the right thing.

Last week we had some major tree trimming work done by Treescape. They did a very good job. Bill Patchett, the owner, gave us an estimate and made some smart suggestions. His guys arrived on time, did a good job in a reasonable amount of time and made it a point to walk around our property to make sure everything was satisfactory before they left. We were very impressed. Their number is (650) 574-5354. They are based in Burlingame.
