My hard drive failed suddenly, and Marc suggested just swapping the electronics with the board from an identical drive instead of sending it to his company for a more expensive data recovery (upwards of $1000). ADeal.com specializes in used Gateway parts and had the identical drive... which was up for auction but I just bought it for $45 to speed up the process. The only trick on swapping the electronics was releasing the flex cable and setting the jumper to "slave" but overall it was pretty simple. (This technique will NOT work if you've had a head crash where the platter is damaged, and some electronics are tuned to the disk so they cannot be swapped - but it's sure a cheap "first try" even if it fails.) Bingo! Got all my files back! If anyone reading this message has a similar problem, I'd recommend these two honest and responsive businesses.
