I need a SUV
So I need to buy a car for my wife because the Jeep Wrangler is not up to the demands of hauling a wee one. So the question is what is the most affordible and reliable Suv out on the market?
I am a Honda/Acura fan, and the Honda MDX seems really great. My friends bought one about a year ago, and the car runs effortlessly with minimal maintenance (basically oil changes). The main user of the vehicle commutes to Palo Alto from Elk Grove (near Sacramento) at least three times a week, and reports great gas mileage, features, and a smooth ride. Plus it feels like it sits up a bit from the ground, enhancing the safety factor and feel. I have owned two cars in my 25+ years of driving, a Honda and an Acura (both used, even!), and can't say enough about their quality and longevity. Maybe Mike Harvey has some deals going on...?
I recently purchased a 2009 Pilot (which seats 8) and am loving it! We needed a vehicle which carried more people as we have two young boys and participate in a number of sport/outdoor activities. Depending on what your needs are just do the research (edmunds.com is a good place to start), test drive, request quotes, etc.
I too am a fan of Honda/Acura, I just purchased my second Acura MDX after having had my 2003 for 5 years and 130,000 miles without so much as a hint of trouble. Is very accessible and easy for the dog and kids and drives fantastic. Comes fully loaded for much less than the comps from Lexus and the like.

I bought a RAV4 in 2007 and I love it. Although I don't have any kids, I really like the height and it does some fun conversions making a trip to the beach or grocery shopping really easy. Both my boyfriend and I drive it so it's enough macho and feminine for you and your wife. And it get's great gas mileage (about 25-27 mpg)! Good luck.
