Disappointing Experience

My family moved to a new house last year. In October 2007, I consigned some furniture to Sutterfield's. In April, 2008 I remembered that we never heard anything from them, so my wife called them to ask for an update. They had sold all our furniture, except for a dining room table and chairs. After several phone calls, we think that maybe they mailed our checks to our old house, and spelled our name incorrectly, so the check didn't get forwarded by the post office. We ultimately got paid for the furniture that was sold, and made sure Sutterfield's had our name and address correctly recorded in their system. Our dining room set remained unsold. It was a very expensive dining set we valued at thousands of dollars. Last week we went through the process again of calling to ask about our table and chairs, and we finally got a call back from the owner today to tell us that they donated our furniture to St. Vincent de Paul! No phone call, no receipt for taxes… nothing! In their defense, it states in their contract that unsold items will be donated. And I'm sure St. Vincent de Paul is a worthwhile charitable organization. But before they gave it away, they should have asked if we wanted to donate our furniture. And when they did donate it, they should have notified us and sent us a receipt for tax purposes. Addendum: Later that week we received the receipt for taxes. The person we spoke to said they usually automatically send the tax receipt, but something went wrong with their system this time.
