Two of my close friends are getting married soon and I am not sure what I should buy them as a gift. They are both my age...old... which means they both have apartments full of the ordinary household appliances that one receives as wedding gifts. Quite frankly, I'm not quite sure I know what else to buy a couple when they're getting married, any ideas?

I can see how it could be potentially hard to stray away from the "safe zone" of wedding gifts (i.e. toasters), however I believe this problem can be easily solved. They must have some common interest if they are marrying each other so you should simply capitalize on that. Buy them a nice book about something they both like, or get them tickets to a show/play/event that you know they would enjoy.

What a wonderful opportunity to really give the special couple something they'll remember -- an experience enjoyed together. How about a gift certificate to something they've both wanted to try (skydiving, scuba, art or cooking classes, etc.)? Into wine? Wine clubs offer a new surprise every month, or, if they live locally, arrange something at 750ml in San Mateo. One of the best gifts you can give is the gift of time: offer to help paint their home, babysit the kids for a night while they go off wine tasting (and you can slip in a nice gift of a couples massage), or plant a beautiful garden that they can enjoy together. Add a copper fire pit and you're a hero. : )
