i'm 6'1", 190 lbs. 33 years old. i used to be pretty athletic, but i got lazy the past couple years and put on some pounds. i was up to 207. i cut fast food and junk food almost entirely out of my diet, along with soft drinks. i have been running for about a month. right now, my routine is run 3 miles a day on the treadmill over lunch Sun-Friday (take Saturday off). Lift weights after work monday-thursday. different muscle group every day. chest, biceps, back, then shoulders. so most days, i work out twice a day. my goal is to tone up. i have made pretty good progress so far. was wondering if i'm doing enough. or if i should work towards running more. anyone have advice?

Good work! That sounds like a pretty intense routine. Good job, and just try to keep that up. To me it doesn't sound like you need any more added to that workout schedule. Make sure you get enough rest for your muscles to recover, and rebuild. If you break them down too much they can't rebuild. My advice is to gradually build up the running to either farther distance, or faster speed. Little by little. And really focus on your nutrition. Now that you've cut out most of the junk look more closely at fat in your diet. Switch to non-fat items and take in healthy fats like avocado and nuts. Make sure you are getting tons of protein, spread out through the day, and don't cut out carbs all together like some people try to do. Good luck.

You should try the South Beach diet. Unlike Atkins, it's not a fad. It basically teaches you how to eat healthy carbs (mostly veggies), good fats and plenty of quality protein.

Try Lite for Life. They teach you how to eat correctly and have food available for sale in San Carlos, Foster City, and Palo Alto. Portion control is important, as well as eating fruits and vegetables. Steak, chicken, and pork should only be eaten in 3 oz. servings! Walking, jogging, and running are good -- twice per day for 20 or more minutes will be helpful. Building muscle and stretching will help you look good as well as help you lose weight. Recently, I started doing Pilates and love the results.
