bay area charity group
Does anyone know of a local charity or organization that sponsors children to attend summer camps? I was looking at the Redwood City recreation department and their week long camps can be > $200 which is out of the price range for some people. I was wondering if there is an organization that subsidies or pays for children to attend. Google search is not returning results. Thanks in advance as always.
I remember seeing a flyer for camps sponsored by the Police Activities League (PAL). I believe that they were under $100/week. You can try this contact: Officer Chris Rasmussen Executive Director 556-1650 x11
I know that REI is REALLY active in the community and might be a great resource, especially for camp-related activities. You may have to go through their corporate office, but the crew in San Carlos is really altruistic and could at least point you in the right direction. Another agency to contact would be Friends For Youth, which may be able to subsidize some of the cost. (www.friendsforyouth.org)
Try CYO (Catholic Youth Organization), the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, and Camp Fire Girls. Ask all camps -- some may offer scholarships but don't advertise them.
Our company offers scholarships to our own summer computer camps, partially sponsored by local service groups and private individuals. Rotary, for example, has almost always been supportive of our efforts. Recently, a needy student attended our "build a computer" camp on scholarship and went home with his finished work: a powerful Intel-based Core 2 Duo, 2.5 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Lightscribe optical DVD reader/writer, 500 GB hard drive, media card reader, Windows Home Premium, etc etc., thanks to the generosity of local organizations and private individuals. Our camps are over for this summer, but perhaps this may be of interest for next year. Donors may prefer to go through a 501(c)(3) organization that runs the camp, as is the case for us, rather than giving the money directly to a family, for tax reasons. We are always looking for additional sponsors, since our dream is to never turn away a deserving student due to inability to pay for either the tuition or the parts costs f or our workshops.
