A recent Financial Times headline reads, “Western countries have upgraded the food (and fuel) crisis into a national security concern as they fear that record high energy and agricultural commodity costs are destabilizing key developing regions of the world.” Considering the underlying causes, including industry-influenced biofuel decisions, an exploding developing-world middle class and a destructive spasm of speculative commodities trading, a solution will not come easily.
Coming to help us understand the scope of this global dilemma is an eminently well-qualified speaker – Dr. Raj Patel. Born in London, Patel received a B.A. in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford, a Masters Degree from the London School of Economics, and in 2002 his PhD in Development Sociology from Cornell University. He has been a visiting scholar at Yale and the University of California, Berkeley. As part of his academic training, Patel worked at the World Bank, World Trade Organization and the United Nations.
Patel has since become an outspoken and noted critic of all of these organizations, and has been tear-gassed on four continents protesting against his former employers. He was one of many organizers in the 1999 protests in Seattle, WA, and has organized in support of Food Sovereignty. More recently he has lived and worked extensively in Zimbabwe and in South Africa. Patel was refused a visa extension by the Mugabe regime for his political involvement with that country’s pro-democracy movement. He is associated through his work on food with the Via Campesina movement, and through his work on urban poverty and resistance with Abahlali base Mjondolo. He has written a number of influential criticisms of various aspects of the policies and research methods of the World Bank and was a co-editor, with Christopher Brooke, of the online leftist webzine, The Voice of the Turtle.
Patel is currently a visiting scholar in the Center for African Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, a Fellow at Food First – also known as the Institute of Food and Development Policy, and a research associate at the School of Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. This year Patel was asked to testify on the global food crisis before the House Financial Services Committee. He is regularly interviewed on the BBC, NBC, Al Jazeera and NPR.
On Tuesday, September 2 at 7:30pm, Patel will speak at 7:30 PM at St. Catherines of Siena Parish, 1310 Bayswater Avenue in Burlingame. Admission will be $5-10 sliding scale, with no one turned turned away for lack of funds.

We are looking for volunteers to WALK in our Heart Walk in late September, and to also assist us by raising money for the Association through this event. If you are interested, please email me at Susan.Mokhtari@heart.org and I will send you the link to our web page. Walkers are eligible for prizes!
I work in our Research Adminstration department, and see first hand both the brilliant research that is being done to combat America's #1 and #3 killers - Heart Disease and Stroke, and also the proposals that we are unable to fund due to lack of money. I worry that one of those missed might have been THE answer to this common killer. One third of all monies raised goes towards research. The remainder is used to educate everyone on lifestyle changes that will prolong and improve the quality of life. We use as little as possible on 'overhead', and I can testify to that since I KNOW how much (or lttle) I get paid!! One of our main missions is to educate women to the fact that Heart Diesease kills more of us than Breast Cancer. Women need to know that they are susceptible, and doctors need to know this also!
Please contact me so that I can send the link. Thank you for your time.
