Geriatric Therapist?
Does anyone know of a local/good therapist who specializes or has a lot of experience with older patients? Thanks, Amy
You know, this is a really great discussion topic, because a lot of us old-school peninsulites have elder family members. I personally do not know of any therapists who care for this particular patient scope, but you may want to contact some of the local retirement or convalescent communites. They may have a great referral base for outpatient care and services. Perhaps the parks and recreation/senior centers may also be of assistance. I've attached a couple of sources below. Good luck!

Hi Everyone, Sorry to have not been clear about what I was asking, and thanks to those of you who responded. I forgot that there are many kinds of "therapists". What I meant was a psychologist or other "mental health" doctor/social worker/counselor etc. who specializes in seeing older patients who have psychological needs/issues related largely to aging (i.e. for my father, who's in his late 80's). One person responded that Stanford has outpatient services in this area--thanks and actually we've already explored this, but found that doing this on a regular basis was too far to go, which is why I'm wondering if anyone knows of a therapist in the Belmont/Foster City/San Carlos/Redwood City area, which would work much better for us. Again sorry for the confusion and thanks, Amy
Mary Moray, MFT is a licensed family therapist who specializes in elders. She recently retired from Mills Hospital where she worked as a care manager, facilitated support groups for caregivers and did one on one counseling. Her private practice is in Belmont. I know that she has very good clinical skills and has great compassion for elders and their families. She may be a good fit for your Dad. You can reach her at (650) 508-9892 or e-mail: Mmmoray@aol.com. Good luck!
This is a tough one, Amy. We had a similar issue with my husband's mother, who is 80. It was extremely difficult to find a therapist who would see her. Even when we said it would be cash and not Medicare they still didn't want to see her. We gave up on the therapist route and tried instead to just find a Psyciatrist. That was also difficult. I think it's a big problem in general that older people aren't getting the psych therapy or help that they need. We finally found a doctor in Burlingame, but he wasn't too good. The problem is that none of these doctors want to take Medicare. And even if you tell them that you'll just pay them cash, they find an excuse not to take your case. I hope you find someone for your father! Maybe you'll have an easier time if you just want therapy and not meds. You may want to call Silverado in Belmont. They're an Alzheimer's care facility and they have a lot of great resources. Even if you're not dealing with Alzheimers, they can probably point you to someone. They are a very pro-active place. I took a tour there and was extremely impressed by what they do. They know a lot of people who deal with geriatrics.
