Does anyone know of a local/good therapist who specializes or has a lot of experience with older patients? Thanks, Amy
I have removed a wall between two bedrooms to make one master bedroom, and I want to fill the gap, all 4 and 1/2 inches with oak to match the floors in the other two bedrooms. the issue is that the floors are off by about 2 millimeters. I do realize that I could if I was so inclined, rip up one room to match the other but I am not that motivated. It is a nail down floor and that would take a day alone simply to not destroy the wood. I could also run the planks perpendicular to the existing floor, but then I would have an accent piece on the floor where I did not intend to have one, and I really do want to increase the value of the home. So I guess the question is how much would it bother you if there was an oak floor in your master bedroom and in the middle the planks (2 maybe 3) where perpendicular to the rest of the room? And Smalltown Rocks
I have an old window air conditioner that needs to be replaced. The new ones are smaller so that means besides putting in the unit a piece of plywood has to be fitted in the empty space and a new elec. outlet has to replace the old one because the new units have a different configuration. The unit weighs about 160 pounds so probably 2 people are needed to install it. I have two estimates from heating, air conditioning companies and am amazed how much they are expecially since I know the unit costs about $500.00 and the estimates are for over $2500. Any ideas what kind of person(s) could do this job or does the price seem reasonable. I do not have central heating so cannot put in central air conditioning.
I feel the need to whip my weak little core muscles into shape but am having a hard time with self discipline and exercising on my own. I've had luck sticking to exercise programs in the past when I've been able to join a class or take structured lessons. Does anyone know of a local pilates studio or gym in San Mateo where the instructors are knowledgeable and motivating? The ideal situation is someone familiar with low back pain who focuses on strengthening and conditioning. Thanks!
Any insights on what makes Belmont unique? I'd love to hear from Belmont residents on what they consider the most interesting insights on their town.
Recommendations? 2 small areas on car need to be painted the size of 1/2 dollar.
I am going to be in need of infant care in January and I'm not sure of where to turn. San Mateo would be the best, but Burlingame, Foster City, and Belmont could work as well...
Does anyone know of a local charity or organization that sponsors children to attend summer camps? I was looking at the Redwood City recreation department and their week long camps can be > $200 which is out of the price range for some people. I was wondering if there is an organization that subsidies or pays for children to attend. Google search is not returning results. Thanks in advance as always.
Just wondering about the Ben Franklin hotel on third, and what the deal was. All I know is that it is being remodled but to what extent and is it going to stay orginal or what?

Want to put in new carpet and need good priceI knew this dealer in San Jose "Biddick Carpet" but cant find him? Does anyone know him or anyone else that is good? I have 2 rooms wall to wall needing new carpet.
Does anyone know what the deal is at Suruki? I was walking by the other day after work and was going to stop in to get some frozen edamame but there was a big crowd of people in the store. I couldn't easily get in the front door so I skipped my errand but now I'm curious about what the attraction was. Can anyone enlighten me?
i'm 6'1", 190 lbs. 33 years old. i used to be pretty athletic, but i got lazy the past couple years and put on some pounds. i was up to 207. i cut fast food and junk food almost entirely out of my diet, along with soft drinks. i have been running for about a month. right now, my routine is run 3 miles a day on the treadmill over lunch Sun-Friday (take Saturday off). Lift weights after work monday-thursday. different muscle group every day. chest, biceps, back, then shoulders. so most days, i work out twice a day. my goal is to tone up. i have made pretty good progress so far. was wondering if i'm doing enough. or if i should work towards running more. anyone have advice?
Hi neighbors, We are looking for a used bike in good condition. Probably a 10-speed, but we're not set on any specific make or model. If you have a bike that's gathering dust in your garage, here's an opportunity to get rid of it :) In additiion, if anyone has advice or tips on a good bicycle shop that sells used bikes, we'd appreciate that too. Thanks Judy judithbrown@hotmail.com
I have a large item I need to crate and ship. Can anyone recommend a place that can do the crating for me? Thanks!
I moved about 6 months ago and the house I'm in is getting outrageously big energy bills. Not just, "Wow, that's a big bill..." More like "Holy smokes that's more expensive than payments on a new Porsche!" big. I called PG&E and they gave me the same ol' "turn down your thermostat and use Flex hours and blah, blah, blah." Well, my thermostat is set to 62 and I've done all the other obvious energy saving stuff and my bill didn't get any lower. I called back, and PG&E told me to hire an "energy auditor" to show me how to lower my bills. The bill is so high I just know there's something wrong with the meter, or there is a gas leak, or I'm paying the bill for the whole street without knowing it, or something like that. Can anyone recommend an energy auditor who can check out my house and figure out what is going on? A little editorial: It is really disappointing that PG&E won't do more to help me figure out what is wrong. They just assume I'm the cause of the problem and don't offer up any assistance. Of course I'm trying to save money, but I'm also trying to do the green thing and save energy. You'd think they would help with that!
Any recommendations for a store to purchase a new refrigerator in terms of selection and price? Thanks.
I'm looking to update my old 80's style fireplace. Need to replace tile, surround, mantle, etc. Need recommendations. Thanks! Wendy
I work downtown, so it is only natural that I take advantage of all the wonderful local restaurants for lunch. However, these local establishments are taking a toll on my waistband. Can anyone reccomend a healthy restaurant or two that I could use as an alternative to my regular diet? Thanks.
I recently had a problem with an almost 1 year old LG Dryer. I DO NOT RECOMMEND using Electric Express Appliance of Burlingame. I had a friend who had problems with her Bosch Washer and they didn't know what they were doing. It was the first one on the list of authorized repair companies. Electric Express sent out a young man who kept giving me excuses of why my dryer wasn't drying. I finally told him I was not disappointed in him, but rather his company for not giving him adequate training and I asked him to leave. I was VERY PLEASED with Baytech Appliance Repair. The owner Zareh came out and explained what had happened and I am now a VERY SATISFIED CUSTOMER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BAYTECH APPLIANCE REPAIR. He repairs All Major Appliances including the high end models. (650) 571 - 8691 or (650) 331 - 7290
Does anyone know of a good German restaurant in the area? There was once a very good one in Carlmont, and another along the tracks in San Carlos, but both are gone now. Where can I get a good sauerbraten and red cabbage within a reasonable drive of San Mateo?
My old heavy patio door doesn't slide the way it's supposed to. Any recommendations for someone to give it a "tune up" (check/replace rollers, tracking, screen etc.)? Thanks!

Does anyone know what is being built on the corner of Concar and Delaware in San Mateo?
So, has the world discovered a better way to paint the house exterior? Every time I bring a painter, they do the job, 2 years later, it looks like it was never painted. All cracks and peeling. One company offered lifetime warranty but they want $30K (yes, no typo here - Thirty Thousand Dollars). I heard there are some paints that supposedly last a lot of years (10?). Anybody know about it? Any ideas/advise how I can get my house painted and forget for more that 2 years? Any advise welcome.
I'm looking for recommendations for a reputable hardscape contractor. This is a relatively small job. I want to grade two small paths in my garden. Thanking you all in advance, Risa-
Hi folks, I'm looking for references for a Hartford agent in the Belmont area. As a requirement for a prospect/client I need basic, personal liability insurance for my tiny (just me) LLC. This is the "fall down the stairs on their property" type of insurance. When I was last in a small consulting firm we used an agency in Mountain View which has since shutdown and retired... too bad. Any personal references? Thanks in advance. Casey
Need to have some cushions re-done. Anyone have a great Upholsterer they can recommend?
I'd like to sell a couple of formal dresses. Can someone recommend a consignment store on the peninsula?
Two of my close friends are getting married soon and I am not sure what I should buy them as a gift. They are both my age...old... which means they both have apartments full of the ordinary household appliances that one receives as wedding gifts. Quite frankly, I'm not quite sure I know what else to buy a couple when they're getting married, any ideas?
I just moved here from the East Bay so I'm still a bit unfamiliar with the businesses around San Mateo. I'm an artist so I need a quality art supplies store to go in order to stock up on all things artsy. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
I've checked the Local2Me archives but there are no current referrals for gutter installation. Do you know of someone who does nice work in the Mid-Peninsula area? I am in need of either extending existing 4" gutters about 10' on two sides of a new additioin or replacing about 70 linear feet on a one story house. Thanks in advance!
Hi, I've got a friend looking for recommendations on hardwood floors installation. Who is good? Has anyone used a place like Empire and were you pleased or not etc.? Thanks, Donna
At a recent meeting to establish new dog parks it was very apparent that most people do not understand the hazards of POOP. Dog and cat poop will not composite in normal compost heaps to a safe level. There are many pathogens in pet waste. There is too much info to post here but here is a link with a lot of info. There are also, many articles on the web. http://www.doodycalls.com/resources_toxic_dog_waste.asp With 149,000 dogs (2005) between SSF and Mountain View Poop in public parks is an issue that causes tension between dog owners and non-dog owners. On a recent walk one of our dog park committee members counted 22 piles before she gave up counting. Nobody wants to see that on their walk in the park. Many issues here, ill-responsible owners ect. Throwing the Poop into the public garbage bins at parks is unsanitary. People dig through it for recyclables then touch other things kids get into them etc. So we need more a place for dogs to go off leash that will reduce the burden on City parks. Also better waste receptacles, like our Gladiator. We have a program where a company can advertise on the unit for $22/wk and we will maintain the unit replace bags and remove the waste and 5% of the proceeds will be donated to the peninsula humane society san mateo. There is a need to Scoop the Poop, that’s why we are here and to give back to the communities we serve and our track record proves it.
Hi All, Not sure what one calls it but I have a rug that is 6 X 9 and want to have it cut to 6 X 7. Does anyone know of a place that does it? It's not some fancy rug, just a plain synthetic fabric of some sort. I would like the edge to look nice and clean, not like my 4 year old took a pair of scissors to it. If anyone knows of a place nearby that would do, I'd appreciate your passing on the information. Thanks! Michelle
In addition to the limited parking at Howard and Ind. Ave. Can anyone explain how the fence that now separates the two lots helps the parking situation or helps any of the stores? The two lots should be connected to allow more egress R Sands
Hi All - I have 2 pieces of artwork that I need to have hung in my dining room. They are metal pieces and I am not sure how best to install these. Do you happen to know anyone who hangs artwork who you can recommend? Thank you. Susie
I have just discovered that I may need to have sinus surgery. I'm not satisfied with my current ENT doctor and would like to find someone (an otolaryngologist-surgeon) who is EXCELLENT -- the best, if possible, to do my surgery. I am hoping to perhaps find a great doctor who works out of Stanford Hospital, if possible. I'm in the San Carlos/Belmont area. Please, if you have had sinus surgery and want to recommend your doctor, email me! Or, if you are in the medical community and know of someone who is considered "the best" in this area, I want to know who that doctor is. I will need to get this surgery done in the next month! Thank you! canyonheathmom@yahoo.com

I will be relocating to the east bay soon, a distance of less than 25 miles. I am thinking of using PODS moving service. Has anyone had any experience with them? From browsing the web I gather that satisfaction depends a lot on the location of the franchise. I read some real horror stories in FL, NY and OR. I would appreciate any information about dealings with the bay area franchise.

I am looking for recommendations for a soccer camp for my 11 year old son. We're hoping to find a program that will be very focused on teaching skills and game tactics. One friend recommended SAYSO Soccer Camp because the director of the camp is highly experienced and has been an excellent coach for their 7 year old. Another friend recommended World Cup Soccer Camp because she felt it offered better challenges than other soccer camps as her son became a pre-teen. Has anyone else had experiences (positive or negative) with either of these two camps? Or does anyone have other recommendations for terrific soccer camps? Our son has had a great time playing in AYSO the past couple of years, but his coaches mostly let the kids learn through the fun of scrimmages. He would benefit from coaching that offered very specific pointers to help him fine-tune his skills, especially since the AYSO games get more intense once kids hit age 10. We think he will thrive on new challenges at a soccer camp. Thank you for any advice you can offer! ~ Sonya
I'm looking for some great summer camps for my daughter who is entering 8th grade. She likes art, drama and sports, but is becoming resistant to the ususal camps. Any ideas?
What's up with Downtown San Mateo? There is no nightlife other than mediocre bars, and those are reminiscent of college town establishments. I walk around the city in the morning and the streets, gutters and sidewalks are strewn with garbage and bar aftermath. Where's the pride? Downtown San Mateo needs a makeover. Or maybe just some community investment...? I would imagine there are groups who organize this sort of stuff, and, like most city agencies, they are probably overwhelmed and understaffed. Does anyone know where we can find out more about what's happening around town cleanups and other projects?
Can anyone suggest a good electrician that's not too expensive? Thanks!
I don't know San Mateo restaurants. Can you help me find one that would be good for a late lunch/early dinner. Not expensive, but not cheap, either. Thanks so much for your help. Marilyn
We have 2 cats and a cat door. A racoon has been coming in regularly and we don't know how to get it to stop. At first it came to eat the cat food we usually leave out all the time, but we've started putting the food away at night and it still comes in, drinks from the cats' water bowl, and leaves messy footprints everywhere. (The good thing is that it doesn't seem to be out to hurt the cats). We want to keep the cat door unlocked at night for our cats to use (which is largely why we installed it to begin with) and don't really want to explore getting a cat door that responds to a tag on the cat's collar (or embedded in the cat?) for many reasons, including that our cats don't wear collars. We tried this stake you get at OSH which supposedly emits a high-frequency sound that deters rodents and racoons, but it hasn't worked. Any suggestions? Thanks!
The ants are here! We'd like to divert or get rid of them in a non-toxic way. Any ideas on companies or ways to do this? I'm not sure where they're coming in. Thanks ~ Deb
I grew up on the East Coast, sailing sunfish and larger boats all summer. I'm certified to sail larger boats in the SF bay, but frankly, it's a hassle. I'd like to take my kids out sailing on small boats - a Hobie would be ideal. Where can I do that within about 3 hours drive of here? TIA Danny

Call Louie and tell them Marge & Doug sent you. You won't be disappointed.

Our KitchenAid dishwasher, which is about 6 years old, has overflowed. We took apart all the hoses and they are freely running. Then we tried the dishwashed again and again it overflowed. We don't know what do do next. Any ideas of who might be able to help? Thanks.
After four years with them, I am getting new phones (not from them). Of course considering the age, this requires a new sim card. I went to one of their dealers, who said no problem, until he pulled my account. Then he says "You have a Blue account, and it won't let me cut the sim." Seems they want me to sign another contract just to change to another phone. Not one that they are paying for, just a different phone. Anybody else have a "Blue" account?
I heard that AT&T is now offering U-Verse, which is a video programming service using fiber that is comparable to Comcast or DirecTV, to homes in Foster City and San Mateo. Has anyone gotten any experience with U-Verse, and do you have any positive (or negative) comments to offer?

I'm looking for a broad day camp that offers activities like arts and crafts and sports (swimming, etc). I've not been happy with FC's Rec Center. I guess I'm looking for the camp I went to when I was a kid, before all the specialization.
Hello I’m looking for some fun camps around San Mateo for the summer.
I am seeking a reasonably priced, honest, reliable handyman who takes pride in his/her work to do odd-jobs, such as installing pre-hung doors, painting, fence-building, minor electrical, etc. Can anyone recommend a handyman? Thanks much for any recommendations.
I just found out that my Curves location in downtown SM is closing. I really liked the "women only, 30 minute workout" concept, and the downtown location was perfect for me. I'd like to know if anyone can recommend a replacement gym for me. Thanks for the help!
I was wondering if someone has contact information for one person to help me with odd jobs in the garden. Several months ago I saw some in this community were using a young adult named Kevin and his mother, but my budget will only allow for one person. I need to dig out several boxwoods, an agapanthus, and one other bush. In addition, I also have various other items that I need help with in the garden. (I'll be posting these plants on freecycle.org.) Please give me your (or their) contact info and idea of the hourly rate. Thanks! Risa-

My daughter has long hair and would like some sort of "up-do."
I need to renew my passport. We are thinking about a Mexican cruise and my passport expires very soon. Sometimes they require that your passport is valid for at least six more months. I know that it can be done at the Post Office on Laurel, but I heard horror stories about the wait and very rude treatment there.

Can anyone recommend a retaining wall contractor that specializes in hillsides in the Belmont and San Carlos areas? Thanks.
My luggage got lost in March and the airline I flew took responsibility. After a lengthy process of filling out forms, they have finally reimbursed me. However, the dollar amount they reimbursed me is about 50% below the value of the goods I claimed. Plus, I had asked for some kind of reimbursement for the time and frustration it took me to replace all the items, my lost vacation time, etc. Of course, none of this was reimbursed. I am contemplating taking the airline to small claims court but have never been through a small claims court procedure. Is the small claims court process a time-consuming task? As I have heard, it is pretty straight forward. Second, if I lose, what kind of court fees am I responsible for? Has anyone had any success challenging a airline in this type of situation? Any other important information to consider? Thanks in advance. Your answers are always appreciated.
A local art teacher, who used to have a studio on 25th Avenue in San Mateo, recently moved her studio to a house in San Carlos. She has been giving her art classes there for a couple of months. Unfortunately some neighbors are complaining to the City about the "traffic" that this brings to their street and she has been forced to shut down her entire summer art program. My kids were enrolled in the program and now we are incredibly disappointed. If you know of an available place where she could move her art school, either temporarily or permanently, please let me know so I can pass on the information to her. I think she would prefer to stay in the San Carlos/RWC/Belmont/San Mateo/Foster City area. I don't know what her budget is, but I think she needs one or two rooms, including a bathroom. An extra sink for washing out brushes would also be good. A commercial space or a rental house would probably be good. I assume that she would prefer a commercial space so that there wouldn't be any future "neighbor" problems. But maybe she'd consider a rental house just for the summer. If you know of ANYTHING or know of a realtor who could help, please email me: canyonheathmom@yahoo.com Thank you!!!
Hi, Trying to find a reliable, reasonably-priced company to replace our garage door. Anybody recently replaced their garage door, is happy with the work, and it did not cost an arm-n'-a leg? Please let me know. Thanks so much! P.S. I also want to thank everybody who took time to respond to my passport renewal question. Many thanks to all of you!
Is there much difference or is one route better than the other-- I'm in SM near Hwy 92 bridge going to Grass Valley. I can go across the SM bridge, take 580 to I 5 and then proceed OR I can go across the SM bridge, take I80 to Sacramento and proceed OR -- my last choice up the peninsula across the Bay Bridge and then I-80. They all look to be nearly the same in mileage and time-- I've never been the I-5 route. Comments or suggestions?
