Dog Training Classes
I have a 5-1/2 month old Irish Wolfhound pup that I'd like to get into some training, both conformation (Wolfhound Specialty is in 6 weeks) and obedience training, perhaps even some lure coursing which it looks like he might just do good at. I've trained a Great Dane and an Irish Wolfhound with Skyline Dog Fanciers (no longer have classes) and San Mateo Dog Training Club (classes don't start until September), but *little* Conan needs the show ring environment with other dogs around that all have to behave. He loves the dog park and people so socialization is not a problem - or rather, IS the problem. I'd like to stay very local in the San Mateo area as my business is consuming quite a few hours right now. Recommendations anyone?
City of San Mateo Parks & Rec has very good obediance classes. I took my pointer to adult dog beginning obedience at Beresford Park and he loved it. The lady who did our class bred giant schnauzers and was familiar with AKC. We even got to do a little agility at the end. This was outdoors at Beresford Park. The price was very affordable.
We use BarkBusters ( www.barkbusters.com ) They're a franchise, and the local trainer/owner is Peter Levy: ( http://www.barkbusters.com/page.cfm/ID/50/id_directory/1054/ ) They have a good system and guarantee their work. They don't have a Webcard, so give Peter a call and tell him he should make a Webcard on Smalltown so people like yourself can find him!
Community Education has a Basic Dog Training class at the College of San Mateo. The class information can be found online at http://communityed.smccd.edu or call 650-574-6149.
Here's a suggestion: Pet Project Lisa is great and very good with dogs and is extremely reasonable.
A Dog's Best Friend - Martina is great. Funny enough that I feel like I should be tipping my waitress, and super knowledgeable about dogs. http://martinasdogs.com
Check out classes at K9 Social Club. They offer classes Thursday nights from 6-8. The early class is for puppies and the later classes are for grown-up dogs. They're right on 25th Ave and have a big space in back where they hold the classes.
Scott, our trainer at Woofgang's Doggie Daycare. specializes in finding your dog's motivation. This makes the dog respond to you the parent in a positive manner. He can make other trainings easier for you by using positive reinforcement techniques by building a strong foundation. He does not use pinch, chain or shock collars to do this, it is reward training. If interested, call 650-872-7700 and ask for Scott. He has private and group classes in South San Francisco, one mile north of SFO.
