Scoliosis Specialist for my 14 year old daughter?
My 14 year old daughter was diagnosed with mild scoliosis last year. On her follow-up x-ray, done about a year later, the curve got worse by almost 10 degrees -- now it's 27 degrees! I'm afraid she may need a body brace. We're all really upset about this. I'm taking her to my orthopedist in Redwood City (she also saw him last year), but I was wondering if there are any scoliosis specialists in San Mateo or Santa Clara counties that anyone would want to recommend to me? Maybe someone at Stanford or up in the City who is an expert in the field that you or someone you know has had a good experience with? Thank you so much!!!!!
Hi -- I'm going to check with one of my clients (I clean his home). He's a surgeon at Stanford. I have scoliosis and am now 46. They diagnosed when I was 18!! It starts when you start growing and stops when you stop growing. Although I had modeled for a few years by then no one had 'noticed'. Now I am 5'10" instead of 6'2"...upside I guess. I was told I had a 'healthy' curve, meaning it was not interfering with any vital organs. It attacks most of us girls, not that the boys aren't afflicted, just not as much. Stretching is healthy and trying to maintain a straight back. Good posture awareness is priority. A back brace isn't all that scary. I wish someone would've dropped one in front of me when I was younger. I understand that she can wear it at night only and not have to be wearing it during the day. The sooner the better. You can mail me at maidbyme@hotmail.com so I can get your personal email and I will find out what I can for you. I'm not opposed to chiropractors. I am opposed to that...for this...for me. (I dont want any chiropractors gett'n miffed at me)
Hi: I just talked to my orthotist (who crafted my achilles rehab brace) and he had two immediate referrals for you: For the medical prescription: Dr. Lawrence Rinsky at Stanford For the brace: Tom Elias, BCO (Board Certified Orthotist) at the Center For Independent Rehabilitation Services in San Jose: 408-995-0144. My orthotist says they are the best in this specialized treatment. I can image that this is a very tough time right now for your daughter. Maybe this early attention will be the best thing for her as she eases into adulthood. Good thoughts are with you all!
Dr. Rinsky is wonderful and his speciality is with children. I have known him for years and feel he would give 100% to your daughter's care. I was a foster parent and took many children of different ages to him and he was professional, kind and I believe very accurate in his treatment.
While your daughter seems to have a progressive scoliotic curve, there are many conservative things that you and your daughter can do at home. In the absense of a hemi-vertebrae, or wedge shaped spinal bone, all of your daughters changes are from the muscle groups reacting to gravity and her daily activities. Please feel free to call for more information.
Hi, I am 62 and have had scoliosis since I was young. Over the years different problems with the back develop from scoliosis. I recommend speaking to Dr. Pete Tsiglieras at 950 Ralston Ave., Belmont, 650 595-0500. He saved me from having surgery when all orthopedic and neurologist recommended otherwise. He really understands the body and bones. He is caring and not expensive. He repaired my herniated discs, has helped my friends with TMJ, and many other illnesses that are on-set by our skeletal allignment. Hope that this helps you too. Janice

Thanks for your reply. I was shocked when my orthopedist called me and said he didn't even want to see my daughter -- he referred me right to a specialist at Stanford -- Dr. Rinsky. (This happened many hours after I'd posted the query here, because I thought my daugther would just be seeing the orthopedist). I looked up Dr. Rinsky on the Web and from what I see he's considered one of the best pediatric orthopedic specialists in the world.
