Speech therapy denied to private school kids?

The (San Carlos) school district recently tested my child and according to their own testing, my child needs speech therapy. However, they have told me that since she is in a private school they cannot provide therapy, only "consulting". Is this true? Does anyone know of families that had to switch their kids to public school in order to get these services? (I have more than one child in this situation) Any input would be appreciated.

I'm not positive, but it makes sense to me that the school district speech pathologist would only see the children enrolled in the public school system. My daughter needed speech therapy when she was younger, and the school speech pathologist assessed her need for services, then we went to a speech pathologist covered by our medical insurance plan. Her speech pathology session through school was only about once every two weeks, they can be really stretched. I imagine your medical insurance will do the same for you.

I think the original author of this post may be correct as well, though I would not claim that I thoroughly understand the system enough. Here's an interesting article that came out a couple of years ago that explains how some special services/education cases were handled in an adjoining district. Warning: Much of the article is unpalatable to decent folks but it illustrates the loopholes that some folks have levaraged. Please don't shoot the messenger, folks. Am just trying to share information. http://tinyurl.com/e42ml (If the link above is scrubbed out, try a seach in SF Gate for 2/19/06 with key words: "Special Education Redwood City Prep School")

Hi, All. The Federal and State governments - to which we all pay taxes - have determined that we are responsible for providing services to students with disabilities. You can read about this at http://ag.ca.gov/consumers/pdf/disabled.pdf (Chapter 5). Regards, Marcia Stein, PHR

I'm a speech therapist and they need to (provide services). Contact the district office and speak with the director of special services. You will have to work within the speech therapist schedule so you may have to take your son out of school and take him to the school where the therapist is located. Good luck to you.

Hi I'm a local pediatric speech therapist. I do believe that your child is eligible for services, but it may be a little tricky. I found this on a legal/special ed site: "Even if your son attends a private school, the school district is still obligated under the law to provide the same special education services they would if he were attending their school. The only difference is that you have to provide the transportation to the location of these services. You need to complete the assessments and then rework his IEP to provide for the additional services he needs. I encourage you to check around to find the best assessors you can for the independent assessment. Sometimes those on the school list are not necessarily the best." If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. www.talkpeninsula.com Good luck!!
