more parks
i think there should be more parks and bike trails in san mateo more "outdoors" type activitys!
There are a ton of places in the peninsula to go... I got a map from the Trail Center that shows the whole peninsula with all of the hidden areas that you can go for hiking, biking, and so on. Their number is 415-968-7065
Here's a couple of local parks to check out. Some great jogging and biking trails accessible from Ryder Park.
i agree that here should be mmore outdoor activities. thecity always sponsors outdoor events like bike or walking marathons for cancer. i feel san mateo would get a lot of support from its community if it held more events like these. i'd also like to see more public pools open :)
The levee in Foster City is great. You can bike under the San Mateo Bridge all the way around to Hillsdale Blvd. and beyond, bordering water the whole time. You will see jackrabbits and herons and beautiful birds, and when the wind is coming off the bay, you get quite a workout!
I forgort about how great the Foster City shoreline trails were. My goal this year is to get a nice walk in each week. I was inspired by a friend who clocked 200 miles on day hikes in 2006. Here's a link to a website he recommended for searching out trails in the Bay Area: www.bahiker.com
I was introduced to both of these parks through field trips with my elementary school kids. The Fittzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach and Sanchez Adobe (a historical site) in Pacifica. The Marine Reserve quickly became a favorite family outing ---- good hiking and tide pools. Sanchez Adobe is great too, especially if you're intersted in California history. Thanks for the reminder wiffletam about the bike trails in Foster City that border the bay lands and take you under the San Mateo bridge. It's a great way to get a closer look a the shore birds and wildlife. I just took my bike out of storage and dusted it off and have been looking for good places to ride. I've been using the Sawyer Camp Trail up at Crystal Springs but the Foster City ride is another great option. All the natural beauty helps me keep my mind off the fact that I'm getting my cardio workout in.
I agree. In Canada they have these trails of untouched land (indigenous flora) that run through their neighborhoods where you can walk for miles. My favorite place to walk is at the Sawyer Camp trail. I start at the Millbrae end and walk south towards San Mateo. It is absolutely beautiful. Friends who hear that I like to walk have asked to accompany me, but I tell them that this is my time to "commune with nature", take in the beauty of the trees, hills and water, and to clear my head. I don't listen to music, I just want to listen to the rustle of the leaves or the occasional bird. This is when I do a run down of all that I am grateful for, and recite my affirmations. After my energizing 5-6 mile walk, I am renewed and happy.
I always enjoy a run at the Crystal Springs cross country course in Belmont. It's where I have many of my meets during the cross country season, but it beautiful year round, especially in spring and late winter. They also have a playground for kids as well as tennis courts. I couldn't find the webcard for it, but it is on Hallmark, which is off of Ralston in Belmont.
