About JoAnn: Education: BS in Microbiology , minor in Chemistry from San Jose State University Worked for 24 years as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist for Mills-Peninsula Hospitals, performing diagnostic tests in the departments of Hematology, Chemistry and Transfusion Services. Worked for 14 years as an Image Consultant with my own business, True Reflections. I used to say that my focus on health issues started in earnest about 12 years ago when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune kidney disease, but it really began many years before that, when I was in my early twenties. Back then, I worked as a Quality Control Technician for a well known distilling and bottling company. I worked with many people who were in their “middle years”. As I listened to them complain about the inconveniences of getting older, and their predictions for me when I reached their age – of “putting on the pounds”, losing your looks,energy and agility, etc. etc., I vowed to myself that I wouldn’t accept their fate! Many years later, I found myself diagnosed with a disease that I had just read about in the newspaper just months before. In this article, a man who was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, ten years earlier, had just received a kidney from his wife. In my work in the hospital laboratory, I would crossmatch units of blood for transfusion for kidney patients, such as he. I was truly devastated. But after seeking treatment from a holistic doctor, against the advice of my attending nephrologist, I learned to approach my health in a completely different way. Over time, I came to sense which supplements were really working for my body, and routinely took these along with other vitamins and minerals with each and every meal. Eventually, all my symptoms abated and I felt healthier than I had in years.
