Christmas is over, the eggnog has worn off, the relatives have finally departed. All that’s left is to pack up the lights and ornaments and figure out what to do with the Christmas tree. Can you just put it out by the curb and hope that the garbage men will take it away? I saw lots of great suggestions here for where to buy my tree, now I'm hoping someone knows the best way to recycle what's let of the needles on my poor dehydrated Christmas tree. Thanks!
I get together with a group of friends periodically for a game night where we take turns hosting a casual meal and spend an evening socializing and playing a game. The old favorites are Taboo, Trivial Pursuits and Pictionary, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for new games to throw into the mix. Something that gets the people engaged and is fun for a group of adults. I'm anxious to hear your recommendations.
Has anyone else noticed the red Nissan 300ZX with the license plate "MS BUTT" that is parked around San Mateo? What's up with that?
I keep telling myself I'm going to learn more Spanish. It seems absurd that I live in an area where a good amount of Spanish speakers live yet I'm still stumbling along with just the basic few words. It's one of my New Year's resolutions to make progress on this front. I'd like to take an adult evening class or something on weekends. Does anyone have a recommendation for a teacher or class in San Mateo/Burlingame area? Thanks!
So I finally realized that I'm not the gym type but also understand that I need to get more active. I just can't motivate myself to stand in front of a bunch of chrome machines while doing repetitive motions, all the while my brain is screaming "Get me out of this place!".
I really like being outdoors and I figure a brisk walk with clean fresh air and some nature thrown in will keep by brain distracted long enough for me to get some exercise in. So my question is where's the best walking/hiking trails in the local area to get me away from the roads and into nature. I like the Sawyer Camp Trail but am looking for other venues. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
Hi All,
I absolutely love the Caesar salad dressing at Amici's (in Redwood Shores). Does anyone have a Caesar salad dressing that they know is similar to the one at Amici's? If you do and wouldn't mind passing it along, I would really appreciate it. I have been downloading recipes from the web and making my own concoctions but I am having problems recreating theirs. It's just not the same.

My son wants to do science experiments with his friends for his
birthday. He'll be turning 11, and most of the online party ideas
I've found are for kids a bit younger. He and his friends have seen
the baking soda/vinegar ones a bunch of times. I'm looking for
something with a real "wow" factor, maybe implied danger too (we'll
have adult supervision, safety goggles, etc.). We'll probably do Diet
Coke and Mentos as one of the activities.
Any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks!

I am looking for a reasonably priced Jumpy rental. Does anybody have a good referral?
I've had a bulging disc in my lower back for years and apparently
recently it got worse. I've been in and out of mild pain for the past
2 years, and I can't seem to regain the level of fitness and strength
that I once enjoyed. I've tried all sorts of treatments. Recently I saw Dr. Millard at SOAR and I'm not happy with the outcome so far. I just feel that he's not really listening to me or trying to work with me.
So I'm back to the drawing board. I really need a recommendation for a good spine specialist who will take the time to listen and who isn't in a hurry to do surgery or stick cortisone needles into my back (I've had that done and it made things worse).
I don't "believe" in chiropractors because I think that what they do
is too violent. I have tried: acupuncture, various types of PT,
Egoscue exercises, painful shiatsu massage, gentle osteopathic
manipulations, and reading Sarno's books (but it's hard for me to
believe that my problem is not structural). Not sure what else to do
or to try. I do NOT want to do surgery or anything else that is
invasive.
If you've had chronic lower back/disc problems and have been to
someone who made your pain go away, please let me know about your treatment or your doctor. I am willing to travel if I have to, to see the right doctor.
While physicians make recommendations about others they meet, perhaps the patients provide the best recommendations?
Any surgeon I should contact, re: foot issues?
Thank you.

Is there a place near San Mateo that sells a wide selection of bright
neon-colored eco-friendly stainless water bottles? Thanks!
so on the north and south corners of 3rd ave and El Camino there are 2 empty lots in San Mateo, anyone know what is planed? what is the deal with the empty lots?
OK, I know this is politically incorrect, and I'll get into trouble for bringing it up, but is anyone else getting a little fed up with all the folks on the sidewalks downtown pushing charities and other good causes? The other day I went for a walk to get a cup of coffee at Pete's. On the way, I was asked by the guy outside of Walgreens to give money for shelters for children. On the next corner a group asked me if "...I had a minute for Gay Rights". Then in front of Pete's a different group asked me if "...I had a minute for the environment". Finally, on the way back a fourth person asked me to buy a toy doll to help get kids off of drugs. These are all great causes and I salute the people who are generously donating their time to raise money and awareness. But I think it's becoming counter productive to have to stop and talk to four different groups every time I leave my office. What do others think?
Over the weekend I cleaned out our closets and I have a big pile of clothes that are in good condition and I'd like to donate them to a local charity. I usually go to Goodwill just because I can remember their name. But they always seem grumpy and put off when I show up. Can anyone recommend a local charity that will accept clothes?
Thanks!
I need a housecleaner to clean my flat after I move on. The date would be December 30. I need stove and refrig. cleaned and basic bathroom and other cleaning. It's a 2 BR, 1000 sq ft and is pretty clean right now, should take more than 4 hours or so. If I like the service, I'm in the market for someone every 2 weeks.
Thanks,
Moondanc
There is a Chinese Restaurant on 4th Ave in downtown San Mateo that seems to change hands frequently. (I can remember when it was a Max's Deli.) I noticed today that it re-opened again recently with an interesting (but not very appetizing) name: H.K. Causeway Bay. Has anyone tried it yet?
BTW: I also noticed that Happy Cafe on B Street is getting a new owner.
Does anyone know of a local street where they go all out with their Christmas decorations? I love it when I come across a neighborhood street full of homes trying to outdo each other with lights and animated displays. Where does one go to find the best concentration of holiday goodness?
Ok, it is almost that time of year, "the BEGINNING"...any new years resolutions??? Need any help achieving them?
For us, our 3 year old black lab is feeling a bit neglected now that we have a new baby girl in the house. Kasey needs a play mate, she is friendly and likes to play hard. Beach, bay, grass, sand... whatever, she needs to open up and play, so that is our new years resolution, find "Super Kasey Girl" a friend to play with. Have a great Christmas and happy New Year!
I'd like a recommendation of which art museum in the Bay Area has the best (or at least largest) collection of art from Europe from about
1300-1600. Thanks!

Hi,
I need to buy my son a commuter car, by the beginning of January. Does anyone have any suggestions/good experiences to relate? I'm tending toward a dealership, so I can purchase an extended warranty & looking for something in the $7000 range.

HELP -
I have a good hide a bed, but the matress still could be better.
Remember those old egg crate mattresses? I can't find any stores with any. Any ideas?
I need something to make the bed (twin) firmer. I looked for a "tri bed". I saw it on line but can't find it in a real live store.
I went to Bed Bath and Beyond.
Ideas?

Does anybody have a suggestion as to what kind of window i should replace my old windows with? Aluminum or vinyl?
So my husband left me with TWO jobs...
I need to find a CHIMNEY SWEEP and a reliable GUTTER GUY
Do any of you have any good suggestions of who I might call?

It was allot of fun, we raiser $450.00. With other funds we have we should be albe to vest another K9 unit. To date DoodyCalls San Mateo fund raisers has prodived over 18 vests to local K9 units. We would like to thank everyone that showed up. With the current state budget and other priorities K9 units are often short of funding. www.Policek9foundation.org
Since we have snow on our local hills, I wonder if anyone knows of a good "pull-off" spot where I can park the van and let the kids out to play in the snow. I see the snow on Hamilton and heard about it in the Santa Cruz Mountains, but seeing it and finding a good place to play in it are two different things.
Thanks!

I bought a Whirlpool Fabric Freshener, which was featured in Good
Housekeeping Magazine as a "Best Buy." This gadget will freshen all your clothes with a steam mist---just hang them inside, and turn machine on and that's it. You can see the machine in action at this website:
http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=513 . Click on 'demo' which is 2/3 of the way down on the right; continue to click on 'more demo' 4 more times, to see all of the demonstrations of the product in action.
My question is how much income does burlingame receive from the parking meters in the downtown Burlingame and does this amount equal the amount that it cost Burlingame to pay the 3to 5 full time employee's [metermaids, etc.] look at downtown Palo Alto with no meters in their dontown area! Burlingame has a very bad reputation among shoppers with reguard to its ticketing and metering policies. We do not need this goverment intrusion.
I am seeking a reasonably priced, honest, reliable handyman who takes pride in his/her work to do odd-jobs, such as installing pre-hung doors, painting, fence-building, minor electrical, etc. Can anyone recommend a handyman? Thanks much for any recommendations.
Two Requests: Does anyone know where I can buy one of those big square desk pad calendars of the San Jose Sharks?
and any cat owners: any clue why my cat pushes her water bowl across the plastic mat so its next to her food bowl. She does this a few times a year.
I love this time of year, particularly whe it comes to putting a smile on a child's face through non-profit gift and toy drives. I'm looking, however, for other avenues to benefit additional range of folks, specifically teens, young adults and seniors; I feel these folks often get left behind with alot of (deserving) focus on the little ones. Does anyone know of any gift collection activities for some of our mature citizens?
I've decided to start my holiday shopping early this year and wanted to ask if anyone can suggest a good place to find unique gifts for men over 40yr? I'm tired of getting the same old gifts like ties, or money clips any suggestions??
Can anyone recommend some really great local streets decorated "to the hilt" with lights? There used to be one in Palo Alto that went all out, but I can't remember the name of it. Would love to take a drive around and see the lights! Any good ideas?
Just drove by the old Grandview Restaurant, and saw that it has been changed! Looks great in there, but still not sure what kind of cuisine? Anyone been there? I did see some great reviews up on Yelp.
Hi neighbors,
I am wondering whether the water in San Carlos is fluoridated. I suppose I could call the water company, but thought some of my brilliant neighbors might know already :)
Thanks

I'm new to Foster City, and I'm having a series of out of town visitors this month. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for good neighborhoods/routes to drive to see Christmas lights and decorations in Foster City. Or do I need to take folks to nearby towns?
I have no idea what passes for a good movie right now, any suggestions?
thanks in advance!
I was just reading a review for Celia's Mexican & American Restaurant where the reviewer was talking up their tortilla soup (I love tortilla soup). With the weather turning so cold recently, soup sounds like just the thing to take the chill off. I'll be heading down to Celia's to try their tortilla soup, but hat got me wondering if there are any other restaurants that serve stellar soups. I'd love to hear any favorites you might want to recommend.
I'd like to sell a couple of formal dresses. Can someone recommend a consignment store on the peninsula?
Could someone recommend a good inexpensive tailor? I have quite a few pairs of pants that need hemming. Thanks
I went in to Ah Sam over the weekend and was blown away by all of the beautiful holiday flora and other decorative items. Some of them were on the expensive side, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other places where I might find such elegant items but maybe not so much?
We love Douglas Fir Christmas trees and would love to get one for Christmas but it looks like they are pretty expensive.
Does anybody know where they have a good deal on Douglas Fir Christmas trees in the Bay Area.
Thanks,
So I just moved here and have found some awesome trails along Hwy. 280. Does anyone have a favorite park or other area that I should check out? I like all levels of difficulty, just as long as it's a dirt trail!
To get myself into the Christmas Spirit I went up into the mountains last weekend to cut down my Christmas tree. I brought home a beautiful 9ft tree... and a day later realized I also brought home a bad case of poison oak. So my attempt at Christmas cheer has turned me into the Grinch. I've tried the over the counter sprays and creams and nothing seems to stop the itching. It's driving me CRAZY. Can anyone help restore the joy of Christmas by recommending a remedy that works to clear this up? It's what I want most this Christmas. :-)
Hi all,
I need a new pair of good sunglasses. I've decided to stop risking my eyesight with cheap, low quality lenses. I'm not that interested in designer frames but I do want top quality glass. Any suggestions on a good place to buy other than the mall stores like Sunglass Hut, etc.?
I'd also appreciate an up-to-date recommendation for an opthamologist or good optomistrist for an eye exam and a place to purchase good quality prescription eyeglasses.
Thanks,
Diane
I've a friend looking for a thermostat for the oven in a Frigidaire
stove. The stove is no longer made but he is willing to consider
purchasing a used one which no longer works but has a working thermostat he can use, or finding a used thermostat. Any ideas on possible sources gratefully accepted.
The stove is a Frigidaire, model RCD-G55-64 Custom Deluxe. The
thermostat part # is 5309956110, 7526560 or 7524247. Other
Frigidaire models my also have the same thermostat. Frigidaire
discontinued production of the thermostat in 2001.
Thanks for any pointers anyone can give me.
Does anyone know if the City has the right to come onto private property (house end of driveway) to view the back of a vehicle to see if the registration sticker is on it?

I have just discovered that I may need to have sinus surgery. I'm not satisfied with my current ENT doctor and would like to find someone (an otolaryngologist-surgeon) who is EXCELLENT -- the best, if possible, to do my surgery.
I am hoping to perhaps find a great doctor who works out of Stanford Hospital, if possible. I'm in the San Carlos/Belmont area.
Please, if you have had sinus surgery and want to recommend your
doctor, email me! Or, if you are in the medical community and know of someone who is considered "the best" in this area, I want to know who that doctor is. I will need to get this surgery done in the next month! Thank you!

I have a lot of family coming for a wedding. Unfortunately I cannot house everybody in my house(guests are staying 1+ months), wondering if anyone knows any reliable and safe and good housing closeby to belmont.
I used to rent one from Menlo Park Feed, but when I called them, I got a message that the number I dialed was no longer a working number. Does anyone know if the store still exists or of another store where I could buy or rent a humane catch-and-release rat trap?
What's up with Downtown San Mateo? There is no nightlife other than mediocre bars, and those are reminiscent of college town establishments. I walk around the city in the morning and the streets, gutters and sidewalks are strewn with garbage and bar aftermath. Where's the pride?
Downtown San Mateo needs a makeover. Or maybe just some community investment...? I would imagine there are groups who organize this sort of stuff, and, like most city agencies, they are probably overwhelmed and understaffed. Does anyone know where we can find out more about what's happening around town cleanups and other projects?

I can't get in or out of my front door. Anyone have a locksmith they recommend?

Can anyone tell me where there is a Christmas Toy Donation box in San Mateo? Thanks.
Can anyone recommend a good resource for installing new windows in a house?
Thanks!
I have been looking for a few months for a day care provider in the San Mateo area. I am not looking to spend thousands of dollars, but at the same time I don't want to visit the bargain basement. My son is going to need care at 3 months so that should narrow the choices down.
Thank you in advance!
I just would like to share my experience as I know that most of the people don't normally check our receipts after buying groceries
Trader Joes: It happened to me twice in a row, the cashier charged me two extra items each time I bought in this store. I honestly don't think it was done on purpose just that their scanner is too sensitive - so please check your receipt before you leave the store
Safeway San Mateo: I received a Babies R Us gift card in the amount of $50 that a friend bought for me back in June 24 as a present. After 3 months I went to Babies R Us to use it and they told me that this card was not activated and that I they always have problems with cards purchased in Safeway. They asked me to call Babies R Us Customer Service. They told me to get the original receipt from my friend, and to go to Safeway with the receipt. I went to my local Safeway and the manager told me that I should go to the original store where the card was purchased. My friend went to the Safeway in San Mateo and guess what: The receipt and the card given to her did NOT match. After further investigations looks like the card that she bought was used in a Babies R Us in San Jose 3 days after my friend bought it. Bottom line is: After lots of embarrasement and a huge waste of time I have no gift and my friend lost her money.
So please be VERY CAREFUL as this is a total scam!!!

I'm looking to take my mother in for her first facial somewhere in San Mateo, can anyone recommend a great place that's not too expensive but that understands the fears of an older woman who's never had a facial?

Looking to have some reflexology done on my feet and hands.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks
Anyone know of a place that still has space for boarding a dog over what is probably the busiest time of the year? The places we've used in the past are all full.
Any suggestions for a great mobile car detailing service?
Does anyone know what restaurants in San Mateo, Belmont, or San Carlos are open on Thanksgiving? Thanks!
I give presentations to small business owners on how to grow their businesses. As a teaching tool, I sponsor CashFlow 101 Games. I'm looking for a place on the Peninsula that will accommodate anywhere from 10 - 40 people; free would be nice! If you have a space and would like a trade, let's talk.
I work in downtown San Mateo and would like to know of any good full-service car washes nearby.
I'd go up to $20 for a middle-of-the-road wash (wash, wax, interior vacuum, tire polish, hand dry). Looking for prompt but quality service at that price.
Looking for a casual restaurant with an outdoor patio that is dog friendly. Any suggestions?
I have been to Nawab, The Clay oven, Roti and I have to give the 1 position to Roti. the price is similar to any other fine restaurant and the food is wonderful. I might have missed one but let me know if you can beat Roti Because I doubt it!!!
Hi! I'm getting married later this summer, and a number of things in my life have taken a financial priority. So I have to get creative with my new and challenging budget. Renting a gown is honestly not my first choice, but my husband-to-be has to rent his dream day togs, so I figured I could, too. : ) Does anyone know of any local rental shops that offer gowns?
On that same note, does anyone have any ideas for inexpensive, unique ceremony and/or reception sites? Thanks in advance!
We want to have some Christmas pictures taking of our 6 month old son. Can anybody recommend a good photographer in the Bay Area? I know we can go to Sears and other places that are inexpensive but we want some pictures that are a little more special for his fist time. Thanks!
I'm having guests for dinner next week and want to serve a nice but not too expensive white wine, probably some kind of Pinot Grigio. But i'm a real novice when it comes to wine, and don't know what to buy. I want to spend no more than $12.
Thanks,
Vicky
Anyone know someone who is good with hair color? I live in Palo Alto. I like my hair cutter but need a good color person.
I'm looking to update my old 80's style fireplace. Need to replace tile, surround, mantle, etc. Need recommendations. Thanks! Wendy
Hi Folks,
One of my gutter drains got damaged and my house is on a hill, so someone would have to be 25' up to fix it. Anybody know of good gutter repair folks? If they're reasonable enough, I'd like to replace all of the gutters in the house while they're up there.
Thanks,
Hello: does anyone know of a good physics tutor? I need one soon in the san carlos area. this is for a Senior in high school, first year of physics. Thank you, kathleen
Hi neighbors,
We're going to get our daughter baptized in early December. We are
looking for suggestions of a site near water, preferably outside.
Originally we planned to use the Pulgas Water Temple but have been
told that they are closed in December. Does anyone know of a good locale for this kind of event, in the Peninsula area?
Thanks!
On Saturday, November 15 between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Curves Foster City, located at 691 E. Hillsdale Blvd, (Metro Center) will be hosting a Holiday Bazaar. There will be lots of beautiful handmade holiday gifts. Start you shopping early. Looking forward to seeing you.
Finally, a mixture of Citysearch, Craigslist and Yelp for the Peninsula! This is great because the websites listed has catered to the "City" with limited knowledge and access to all the great things of San Mateo County. You have your reviews from clients, networking about other services and coupons/deals for patrons. And it's ALL LOCAL!
Uh-oh... It's raining. Does anyone know a good, reliable, honest gutter cleaner??
Hi. I'm going to redo my flooring in bamboo hardwood and am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for someone who is good but not expensive. Thanks!
I have been wanting to go somewhere around town where they have live music playing. Anyone know of restaurants/bars that have bands/singers come?
Looking for ideas to celebrate a 50th birthday with a medium-large group. Would be in January. A tropical-themed venue would be ideal. Also looking at a roller skating party or go karting in Burlingame. Give me some fun/unique ideas.
We bought our son a drumset, and neglected to get the garage
soundproofed first (what were we thinking?!?). In order to keep peace with our neighbors I'd like to at least soundproof the garage door. Any local recommendations?
I did find a very comprehensive website that describes the process,
but it's more than I'm willing to do right now:
http://www.soundproofing.org/infopages/garage.htm
As with the other 100 treatment remedies out there, I've heard that reflexology is the latest hot point. Does anyone have any recommendations for a reflexologist in the area? (San Mateo preferred, but really anywhere along the Peninsula is fine)
Thanks for taking the time to reply! : )
hi
Does anyone have a referral for a housecleaner or housecleaning service in San
Carlos?
kathleen
Hi,
Does anyone know where I can rent a steam cleaner for an area rug? In my youth, I seem to remember being able to do so at grocery stores.
thanks!
Has anyone, or do you know anyone, who has had a facial or other "salon" type of services done by the students at CSM? I'm considering going there and would appreciate any feedback.
Does anyone know the answer to that Q? And also, about how much would it cost to do?
TIA
Vicky
We know how to use internet etc for tickets, hotels etc., but might wish to consult with a travel agent anyway, re travel in Italy. Anyone had a great experience with a travel agent, ideally with Italy/Europe expertise? Thanks. -Bruce
Any recommendations to share?
Thanks,

We are long time Comcast Cable tv users but the cost escalates often and is now up to close to $87. Direct TV is offering a monthly charge with even more channel section at $49.99 for the first year including DVR, HBO, etc.
Have any of you had experience with Direct TV? Was your service effected in bad weather and how long were you down? If you have had to call for service, how long before a tech could come out?
I've called Comcast and they have no interest in retaining us as a customer and it's quite discouraging to pay that amount in this economy.
My client has a leather sofa tear that needs to be repaired, and I would like to get recommendations from businesses or people who can recommend someone who did an excellent job for them. Please call me at 650 370 0440. Many thanks!
I was driving by the Clamhouse the other day & saw that its windows are newspapered. Does anyone know what's going on with them? Are they closed for remodeling or are they out of business?
Good Morning Neighbors,
Does anybody know a person or business that offer services in professional resume Writing?
Many thanks!

Is there a good program in this area that helps kids get involved in community service during the holiday season? I know that high schools have a lot of opportunities, but what about ideas for younger children?
I just moved here from the East Bay so I'm still a bit unfamiliar with the businesses around San Mateo. I'm an artist so I need a quality art supplies store to go in order to stock up on all things artsy. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Last year my primary care physician dropped out of every PPO and HMO insurance network. You pay up-front, and you're on your own to work out any re-imbursement with your insurance company. Calling around to try to find another one, I'm finding this to be a common story. Two other local physicians have told me they are no longer members of any insurance networks.
What's the deal? Is this some kind of semi-organized protest against low insurance payments? Why are all the doctors dropping out?
And does anyone have a recommendation for a primary care physician that really does still take insurance (UHC if it matters)? Don't believe the on-line directories from the insurance companies themselves, they're all out of date.
