Suruki
amietron's Review:
4.5 stars
Suruki Supermarket is a family owned and run grocery store in downtown San Mateo on the corner of 4th Avenue and California Drive. The market hours are 10 AM - 7 PM Monday through Saturday and 11 AM - 6 PM on Sundays.
Suruki has the freshest fish selection on the peninsula. Though the fish may be more expensive than at 99 Ranch or Marina, it's definitely fresher. Some of the market products such as tofu, curry mix, instant ramen, snacks and candy are cheaper at Chinese markets and Ichiban Kan around the corner, so if you're trying to save money, you'll need to shop around for the best prices.
If you ever need help with a japanese recipe, Mrs. Suruki is always available to send you in the right direction (sometimes you may need to ask a clerk to have her come from the office upstairs to help you).
Fresh tofu from San Jose tofu is delivered on Wednesdays between 12 and 1 PM for $2.25. If you've never eaten homemade tofu, you HAVE to try it! There's also free okara on delivery days.
The homemade mochi they sell there is excellent. It's made every morning and is still soft mid-day. 5 pieces of plain mochi for $2.75. Mochi with red bean is $1 each or $1.25 for the ones with red bean and strawberry. They're located near the door across from the hot bento boxes.
They have many Hawaiian products like frozen manapua, hawaiian salt and Zippy's chili!
*The sushi and bentos are made daily and are 50% off at 6:30 Mondays through Saturdays, and at 5:30 on Sundays. The sashimi sliced daily goes on special as well (at the same times).
