Summer Activities for 13 year old
I'm looking for some great summer camps for my daughter who is entering 8th grade. She likes art, drama and sports, but is becoming resistant to the ususal camps. Any ideas?
The Mariners Point Golf Summer program is for kids up to 15 years of age. Golf is a fun recreational sport for all ages, even for the young ones.
Always Quilting, a quilt and fabric shop in San Mateo, has kids camps that are perfect for that age group. The kids make a complete quilt in a week of camp. You can find more info at www.alwaysquiltingonline.com or call 650.458.8580.
You might want to try Marina's sewing. Her students get to practice fashion design and have a great time creating outfits and learning to sew. It allows the child's creativity to come out and is a lifelong skill that will come in handy time and again. And they get such satisfaction from wearing something they created themselves. Check out the attached Webcard to learn more. You can also check out the "Made by Me" fashion show this weekend with your daughter to see what the kids create in the classes and meet.

You can try Planet Granite, they have few programs for kids. A Summer program, After-School program & Climb & Dine. Rock climbing is so much fun, it keeps the kids fit and helps with building strategy. It also builds with their social skills since it involves teamwork. One to climb and one to belay. Check it out.

A new Kids fitness center called Safari Run that opened this past Fall has a Fitness training camp for kids 10-13. I put my daughter in it. They will be doing outdoor and indoor activities, arts and crafts, games, and a field trip. It is based around the kids having fun while exercising and learning about nutrition. My 6 yr. old takes a class there and she is telling me what a sugar gram is and a carbohydrate. Jodi, the owner and counsleor for that session is AWESOME. She is a certified trainer and great with kids of all ages!
There is a summer program, College for Kids, for youth entering 5th through 9th grades with the San Mateo District. see www.smccd.edu/collegeforkids for full details.
Pied Piper Players is offering an exciting new drama camp this summer for 12-16 year olds. Participants will be staging High School Musical, and will have the opportunity to work with a very talented and experienced staff, including director Katie Rubin, who has acted on stage, and in film and television, and has directed and written a critically acclaimed one woman play. Rick Reynolds, award winning musical director in the Bay area, will be directing the music for the program. The camp runs from July 16-August 4 and culminates in two performances at the Aragon High School Theater. For information, please go to www.PiedPiperPlayers.org.

At first, I just responded directly to the individual poster; but since this topic seems to have generated considerable interest, I hope it is OK to share the following: The Miller Institute for Learning with Technology, a local nonprofit, offers 2 weeks of day camps relating to technology, in mid-July, for ages 8.5 and up. These are held at Tierra Linda Middle School in San Carlos. A flier is available here: http://www.learningtech.org/summercamps08/summercamp08_flier.pdf There are still openings, especially for the second week. -- Mark
