I'm feeling a need to learn basic First Aid skills. Can anyone recommend a good place to take classes? I don't want to become a certified EMT - just a person who is reasonably prepared for a bad situation. Any ideas?

Many fire stations offer CPR classes to the public. In San Mateo, the fire station on 27th Avenue offers classes. The information for signing up is http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/dept/fire/ems.html

My son was required to take a CPR/First Aid class in his senior year of high school. The class was excellent, and taught through a local chapter of the Red Cross. Here's a link that will give you some more information: http://www.bayarea-redcross.org/training/register.htm
