Takahashi is pretty good. They've been in the same location for over 100 years! In addition to the the fish, they have lots of interesting things imported directly for Hawaii, like Lion's Coffee.

I've heard Nijiya is good, but I haven't been there myself (raw fish freaks me out!) I attached a review from someone who has been there.

The consensus in our office is that you can also try Ranch 99 in Foster City and Marina Market in San Mateo, but Suruki has the best fish for sushi. See the review attached below.

I know you are asking about Japanese markets, but I have to say Crystal Springs Fish and Poultry market has the freshest fish around. I try to always buy my fish here... Follow the bear...

Definitely Suruki. Their fish is excellent! They also carry nori and anything else you'll need for your party. For pre-made sushi, they have a 6:30 half off sale, but it's usually jam packed with people. Have a great party.

OK so it's not a Japanese restaurant and it's not Sushi grade fish but there's a local mexican market near me that has a great selection of fresh fish at a good price-particularly for a small neighborhood market. It's so much easier to stop in here and quickly pick up some fresh fish for dinner rather than going to the larger chain markets. They also have a great little taqueria. Off topic but still a good find.

Marina Market on Norfolk @ E. Hillsdale (I shop there regularly for our weekly sushi nite at home) or Ranch 99 @ 1070 Foster City Blvd., Foster City. They have other locations in the Bay Area as well. Here's a link to their store locator. http://www.99ranch.com/StoreLocator.asp?Store=All
