I'm really interested in taking some cooking classes, but am wondering if there are programs in the area that cater to beginners with gradual acceleration to more difficult dishes and preparations. Does anyone have any recommendations? TIA!

I don't know of any long term cooking schools, but at least 3 places in San Mateo offer 1-off cooking classes. They're mostly single evening sessions (sometimes a 2 or 3 week series). They usually cost around $30 each, including the food (which you get to eat). Degree of difficulty varies, but a beginner could get something out of most of them. I've done a few of them, and they're mostly low-stress fun nights out. 1. Whole Foods has classes in the little demo room in the market. Current schedule here: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/calendars/SMT.html 2. CSM sometimes offers cooking classes in their Community Ed program. It looks like they haven't posted the Fall schedule yet, but it can be found here: http://communityed.smccd.edu/index.cfm? 3. The San Mateo Parks Dept also sometimes has cooking classes. The also haven't posted the Fall schedule yet, but you can find it here: http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/index.asp?nid=1230
