I have been wanting to go somewhere around town where they have live music playing. Anyone know of restaurants/bars that have bands/singers come?

You might want to go to B Street Billiards on Wednesday Evenings for Open Mike Night. It is off the street local musicians but I've heard some really good players in there. There is also the Casbah on B street but it's mostly hip hop and latin music if that's your thing. They are trying to change to a more diverse musical selection and they had a Jazz Party on Friday the 27th before Halloween. Several other restauraurants and Bars periodically offer live music. Hope that helps

I've heard a couple of good local musicians at the open mic at B Street Billiards right here in downtown San Mateo. And in Burlingame there's live music periodically at the Vinyl Room (they usually have DJ's spinning music on the weekends). Towles also has live music most nights. I'd love to hear where else live music can be found in town.

Although it's in Burlingame I came across this Smalltown Webcard listing for live Jazz music at Barracuda. I've heard people in town talking this place up so it could be well worth a trip to check out both the food and the live music offerings on a Saturday night.

Sometimes Il Piccolo on Broadway in Burlingame has live musicians. It seems sporadic, so maybe go in and ask if they have a schedule you can see.

In addition to Barracuda in Burlingame, Towles, which is right down the street from Barracuda (on the corner of Burlingame Avenue) also often has live music, plus the food is very good too.

I read in the SM Daily Journal that the Broadway Grill in Burlingame now has live music on Mondays. It's called 'Motown Mondays' because of the vocal group that will be performing there. Check out the attached Webcard for more information.

In about a week Smalltown will be launching a new version of the home tab that features a local events calendar. This will make it easier to find local music happenings.

For something a bit different than an actual band, check out The Swingin' Door on 25th avenue (by the Dollar Store and Bay Meadows). On Friday and Saturday nights they have the only dueling piano show in the Bay Area. If you've ever been to a dueling piano show before you know it's a blast. The piano players play everything under the sun, by request, and really get the crowd involved in the show. I've had a great time every time I have gone. They do have other live music, like the Silicon Gulch Jazz Band every Tuesday night, live Bluegrass band the first Thursday of every month, and a solo guitar player on Friday evenings, I think he starts about 6:00. Monday nights they have a classical piano player upstairs, kind of a Karaoke type thing but with an awesome piano player playing the music. I highly recommend the dueling piano show though, that is a fun night out in San Mateo!!!

Gators has musicians playing blues on some evenings during dinner. I think they may have music with bruch too but I’m not sure. Maybe Gator and check in here and let us know the music schedule. I've been in twice for dinner when there was music and it was really nice. A great backdrop to the meal and good musicianship. The first time it was a solo guitar player and the second time it was a trio with stand up bass, and two guitar players. Gator’s is a bit expensive but the food and atmosphere are top quality and I’ve always felt it was a good value compared to other restaurants in their league. It’s my favorite downtown restaurant for a special meal. And the music just enhances that experience.

On the 1st and 3rd Sunday each month, St. James hosts open mic night. show up and you're likely to hear a varienty of original artists, either playing solo or with accompanied by the house band (electric & acoustic guitars, bass, drums & keyboards). In fact they supply the equipment. So if you're an aspiring singer/songwriter, musician, poet, comedian - or if you just want to check out the local music scene, all are welcome, including those patrons under 21.

B Street and Vine is a wonderful restaurant which offers live jazz and great food and wine. I believe that on sundays they have a jazz band made up of extremely talented students from Aragon High School, however that was last year so I don't know if they will continue that now that a few of them may have graduated. Otherwise, the jazz is top-notch and the food is great.

The hottest niteclub in the San Mateo area is in the West San Mateo Hills, so you are going to drive a bit, but it will be worth it! One nite, when the band, the music and the people were hot, I found myself on the dance floor 'bumping butts' with both Shannon Doherty (of 90210 fame) and Madonna! The Pioneer Saloon in Woodside (just down 280 to Redwood City exit, but instead of downhill to RC, go uphill on Woodside Road about a mile, 'til you come around a corner of this country road and see the famous old Pioneer Hotel. The Pioneer Saloon is on the left front of the first floor!) The Pioneer is just a crappy bar-dig on off-hours, but when they have live music scheduled (several nites a week), the 'heat' rises quite quick as start-time (about 9PM) approaches and the place starts filling up with people. (May or may not be Cover Charge, but always is on weekends!) No advertising, but people come here from all over (the world, literally!), because they know that the Band-of-the-nite will-be-the-Best there is! (Don't know whether they have a mailing list as yet, but you can call them and ask what band is playing that nite!) C&W, Country, Country Rock, R&R, R&B, Blues, even some Hip-Hop, and more! California Cowboys, one of the best, plays regularly. Whiskey Hill, Billy Band, and more! One Tuesday nite, when Billy Band was Rockin' the House, the small tables right in front of the stage, were occupied by the U2 crew, who had dropped in to hear Billy Band! It is a damn small place, with only about a dozen tables and a small dance floor, so the Pioneer is Standing-Room-Only when the Bands are hot! And locals stop by quite often, sometimes early to sit & talk with friends and await the music later in the evening! Such as Joan Baez, Neil Young, Steve Young, Joe Montana, and other noteables! More info is available on Google at 'Nelson R's Reviews | San Mateo | Yelp' (drop the quotes and make sure to get the spaces right!)
