San Mateo Landmark
I can only name a handful of small businesses in San Mateo that have been around as long as I can remember. Ah Sam, Wisnom's and Talbots, for example. The last time I was at Takahashi's was 30 years ago after I returned from Hawaii. It was the original Japanese market in this area and one of the few places that carried the foods we were used to. So I made a special effort to have lunch there today. The young checker there was extremely helpful. Gene (sp?) put together a little lunch plate for me that was reasonable priced. They have a seaweed side dish that was very yummy! What struck me the most is that they both gave me personal attention that is lacking in most establishments. Great!

Hard to find Hawaiian/Japanese thin
Nice thing about Takahashi is that they carry stuff from Hawaii that I haven't been able to find anywhere else. My friend told me that markets in Hawaii are like Takahashi. The things I like there are their fresh deli items. The prepared Ahi Poke is quite good, but it is a bit pricey, at $21 a pound. They also have Portugese sausages which are quite popular in Hawaiian food. In my opinion, the sausages are among the best. Fry up an egg over-easy and eat it with rice and you have a good meal. Check them out.
