Little China Kitchen has created a distinctive style of cooking that is very flavorful and a pleasant change of pace for the San Mateo area. I highly recommend trying this place.
What a nice surprise in San Mateo -- a chinese restaurant that's actually got a unique feel and flavor. Well, the menu is relatively simple, certainly traditional Chinese, yet the chefs have managed to create something different even in the basics (soups, noodle dishes). The service is friendly, attentive without overbearing, and prompt. And the best part is that it doesn't make a huge hole in your pocket -- very reasonable prices for a place that looks like it might charge a bit more. Not uber fancy but still a very nice, simple restaurant.
I don't know what I did to be able to have lunch at such a great place, but I really, raelly like this place. Newly opened in downtown San Mateo (home of "Where to Eat Today?"), the service was fast but not aggressive, thorough but not invasive, and the food was great. Fresh mushu pork, and PA-LENTY of it. What really blew me away was the price: lunch specials for $6.95 usually leave you with mid-day hunger pangs, but LCK delivered. Will most certainly be going back to try everything else.
I agree with all the other positive reviews... this place has very good, fresh, relatively healthy food. Just wanted to make sure everyone knew that this new addition to San Mateo also has the same great food to go.
I went in for dinner the other night with my friend who loves to give everyone he comes in contact with a good-natured hard time. The staff at Little China Kitchen easily got caught up in the mood and playfully endured his gentle ribbing. Maybe we were all in such good humor because the food was such a delight. It was a bit cold outside so we started out with the hot and sour soup which had a good amount of spicy heat and flavor. We split the Moo-Shoo pork and Sweet and Sour Chicken and enjoyed every bite. It all seemed much less greasy than other Chinese restaurants I've tried and the staff and owners really made us feel at home and were invested in making sure we had a good time and a great meal. Highly recommended.
Had a lovely dinner at this new chinese restaurant in San Mateo. A lot of thought and care went into the decor as it is anything but the drab typical decor of most Chinese restaurants in town. The service was polite, gracious and genuinely interested in our opinions of the food. The food was delicous with fresh ingredients and the best part is that they can saute some of their dishes oil free in chicken broth. For a lovely, delicious and healthy dining experience give Little China Kitchen a try, you will probably find my husband and me there!
This place is a little more refined than most neighborhood Chinese restaurants. Right away you notice the new new owners have taken the care to create a comfortable and pleasing atmosphere. That sets the tone for the menu where they exhibit the same care with inventive items which caters to a healthier take on traditional Chinese cooking. Less oil and more flavor seems to be the result. We tried a variety of dishes and they all were crowd pleasers. Definitely worth coming back to.
This place is REALLY good! We went for lunch two weeks ago. We had the lunch specials (offered on weekends!) and the food was very fresh and of high quality. And the quantity is enough too - no leaving feeling hungry! Went back for dinner this week and was still blown away. Each time we went, there were not that many people dining there, and the ones who did come in were experiencing it for the first time. We need to get the word out about this place!
I found a cute little restaurant in downtown today. The food is awfully good. It's more like California cuisine than Chinese food. It's clean with nice presentation. The service is so friendly, jist like visiting a friend's house. I am so glad and definitely will be back.
I visited an old friend from college, and she dragged me to this place. I'm not an authentic chinese food lover, but i am a big fan of her. It was truly a pleasant surprise, the establishment is super clean while its modern look provides patrons with a sense of comfort as you enjoy your tasty meal. Everything she ordered for me was wonderful, especially the chicken with green bean. The flavor that originated from my meal was shocking because of the healthy methods (stir fried in chicken broth, instead of oil) that were used to prepare the dish. Now I have two things to look forward to when i visit the westcoast.
The food is a mix of elegance and flavor: Even basics such as wonton soup are complex and flavorful. The rich and generously-portioned hacked chicken with green bean, and Ma Po Tofu. There is a special "vegetarian section" so that even dieters can find something they're willing to eat. Prices reflect the quality of the room and service.
The menu at Little China Kitchen informs you right up front that they are striving to be different - they use less salt and provide healthy alternatives in cooking when possible, like using chicken broth instead of oil. The restaurant is pleasant and so was service. The food tasted great - I tried the kung pao chicken lunch. We do have a lot of Chinese restaurants in this area, so they need to work harder to retain customers. Little China Kitchen should receive that type of customer loyalty.
At first I thought, "Another Chinese Restaurant? There are so many in Down Town." But then I ate dinner there. Little China Kitchen is not just another Chinese restaurant. They do more than just plate the food, they present it, giving it a special touch. They seem to take pride in what they do and provide high quality food and service. Everything was delicious. I will definitely be back and will recommend it to my friends and coworkers.
This is a new place very reasonable, food is fresh sampled their chicken with veggies dish and springrolls. Very nice. Service was good and portions are ample. I'd like to try it again when their a little busier.
I was surprised when Rogin's closed at this location. I miss it but was happy to find that this new restaurant is a place I can add to my lunchtime favorites. They've done a really nice upgrade to the interior and the new owners are focusing on bringing healthy and fresh Chinese food to the downtown crowd. The sauces are lighter, the flavors are more pronounced and you can get brown rice instead of white. The sweet and sour chicken was some of the best I've ever had and the pea sprouts with shitake mushrooms were delicious. I’m so glad to have a Chinese restaurant within walking distance. It’s my new favorite place.
I think I've admitted in other reviews that I don't like authentic Chinese food. Some of the ingredients are too exotic (I ain't eatin' no chicken feet) and many of the dishes are flavorful but too greasy. I like "Americanized" Chinese cuisine that is healthy without being bland. You know, white chicken breast meat instead of those weird unidentifiable chicken parts… broccoli that looks like the broccoli at Safeway… fresh red and yellow peppers in the Kung Pao. Today I had lunch at the new Little China Kitchen on Third Ave and I was happy that their menu included lots of delicious options for people like me. I had vegetarian spring rolls that were crunchy and fresh, followed by chicken and broccoli that was very tasty and healthy. In fact, they offer the option of brown rice, feature healthy cooking oils when possible, and use chicken broth instead of oil in many cases. The service was extremely friendly; for a restaurant that just opened its doors; they seemed to be pretty organized. Check it out and support a new local business!
