I was happy to see this iconic diner ressurect when the infamous Villa Hotel became a retirement community. The menu is nothing extraordinary (although my companion raved about the cinnamon-infused french toast), but the service was very nice. Paul's is open to the public, and despite their busy hour, the friendly staff was attentive.
The owners (who reportedly also run the equally-iconic Sky Kitchen in San Carlos) were actually married at the Villa Hotel int he 60s, and have returned to set down roots. Nice to see some local "kids" bring us back to familiar ground.
What do you know -The same great people who own the Sky Kitchen at the San Carlos airport and the Omlette House on El Camino in San Carlos have recently opened this place a few blocks south of Hillsdale Mall - THAT'S why there are 50 different omlette choices on the menu! Today we had their homemade corned beef hash and it was delicious, too. Next time they are going to make us an omlette with the hash inside - that should be killer.
I eat here at least once a week. Service is quick and friendly. Prices are affordable to. Maybe I should try something different though instead of the #14 (Bacon & Swiss Omellette).
Paul's at the Villa is the new restaurant at the site of the old Villa Hotel and is owned by the same family that owns Sky Kitchen Cafe at the San Carlos Airport and The Omelette House in San Carlos. The menu is basically the same as the other two restaurants, except that the Villa location offers dinner. Paul's location hours are 7 AM - 9 PM, Monday thru Saturday, and close at 8 PM on Sundays. (Please verify hours at location.) As a long-time customer of Sky Kitchen Cafe, I am excited that they have opened a restuarnt in my town, San Mateo.
The menu features 49 types of Omelettes, plus an option to customize your omelette, as well as typical breakfast and lunch foods like pancakes, eggs, cereal, sandwiches, salads, etc. Prices are very reasonable, most menu items ranging from $5-$11. Dinner menu is typically $7.50-$10.95 and features pasta, fish, salads and meat entrees. Desert is basically Ice Cream and Sundae. Food is fresh and delicious!
My favorite menu items are the Turkey Reuben Sandwich (basically a Reuben with Turkey replacing Cornbeef), Chilli and Cream Cheese Omelette with Avocado, and Spaghetti. Very good Clam Chowder, too! The restuarant actually sells a normal Reuben sandwich, but is willing to replace the Cornbeef with Turkey on request. I wasn't an omelette eater unitl I tried their omelettes! Delicious!
Good Service, unique menu, affordable, and family owned, Paul's at the Villa is a welcome restaurant addition to our community. Parking is sufficient. Seating is booths with a few freestanding tables, though some of the tables on the booths are movable to allow for spacious seating. Counter seating available, too. Well worth a visit!
