After reading all the other reviews here, I was determined to try this spot since I had been avoiding it for a long time because of the name Sheep King. By the way, it looks as if they've changed it back to Chef King. I had never had hot pot before, and tried the half and half. I love spicy food and the spicy broth was too much for me. The tableside sauces are very good, in particular the sesame sauce. We tried bamboo shoots, beef, mushrooms, thin noodles and accompanied it all with some onion pancakes. Next time I'll add more greens to the mix. We had more than enough for two people and my recommendation is to put the beef in for about 10 seconds at the very end. Otherwise it gets tough. I will go back! If you've got any comic book fans in the area, stop by Lee's comics before or after dinner.
Their hot pot is excellent. Authentic food from a Mongolian family who also dish up some amazingly good Szechuan food as well. Choice of regular or spicy on the hot pot (or a divided pot with both), a tray piled high with fresh veggies, shaved meats, meatballs...phenomenal. Try their lamb crepes, their braised tofu or vegetables with gluten. Mongolian Beef is your fave? Best you'll ever have is here. Short on ambiance, but great food and a fantastic place for a group.
Sheep King restaurant is a hidden gem. Yummiest and most unique Chinese food in San Mateo. It's the equivalent of getting authentic, home cooked food. The noodles are fabulous and the hot-pot that cooks int he middle of the table is really fun for groups. Big thumbs up!
If you're looking for a nice HOT soup on the coldest of cold days, try Sheep King! They serve the spiciest soup I have ever had in terms of hot pot. The cool thing about this hot pot restaurant is the fact that you can have two different soup bases -- the pot is halved so you can have traditional soup base on one side and spicy on the other. Order meat, pick your veggies and toppings, and you're good to go! A fun way to spend your lunch hour cooking up a meal just the way you like it.
For $7.95 you get a generous portion of thin splices of either lamb, pork, beef or chicken, meat balls, tofu cubes, vermicelli, vegetables and steamed rice. You can choose spicy or non-spicy broth. The meat is cut really thin which is crucial for hot pot. It is also fresh. The service is average because people go there for the food. It is hard to find a similar hot pot place in the bay area.
