I really enjoy Thai food, and downtown San Mateo has their share of restaurants toting Thai. I recently dined here with some friends and the service was prompt and courteous. The food was very reasonably priced, ample for a lunch portion and good (not earth-shattering good, but tasty). I've not dined here in the evening, but this is a terrific lunch spot and I'm guessing that dinner would be just as good.
I must say that I am usually not the largest fan of Thai food, but this restaurant truly suprised me. I came here for a lunch with my co-workers because they had heard rave reviews. I didn't order anything that was too far out of my comfort zone, but I was still very impressed by my dish and I have truly formed a new opinion of Thai food.
Actually much better than a-okay...I think it's the best Thai food in the area. It's a pretty small and cozy restaurant although in the warmer months outdoor seating is offered. Appetizers are outstanding, particularly the shrimp rolls and spring rolls. Of course, one of the hallmarks of an excellent Thai restaurant is the pad thai and they don't disappoint. The lunch menu is very affordable and excellent. For dinner, I've had a number of the entrees and each is outstanding. Try any of the tom yum soups, the calamari salad and the beef entrees. If you love southeast Asian food, you have to try Thai Satay.
I've been eating at Thai Satay for years because I think it's the best Thai food in San Mateo. I also think the staff is very friendly, even when they're busy. If you haven't eaten here before, go soon. You'll enjoy it while supporting a local merchant. Tonight I tried a new dish I loved, even though it is kinda pedestrian: pineapple fried rice. I would describe it as Thai leftovers. But it was really good. Take rice, pineapple, shrimp, chicken, carrots, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, cashews and raisins, and stir fry the whole thing. If you like sweet and savory combined in one dish… wow, it doesn’t get any better.
This is a great drop-in-for-lunch Thai Place. Casual atmosphere, quick service, tasty food, and specials for lunch. I have only eaten here for lunch during the week and find that the price is right, food is good, and service is quick.
I've only been here a few times, but it's been good every time. It's always nice to know when you go to a place that you won't have to try everything in the menu to "find" the good ones. I'm not saying that it's all good. I only know one place for everything good, The House in North Beach. Anyways, it's worth a try. But it is a bit small in there, I was there with four tall people and we felt like we were sitting at the kids table.
We enjoy eating in the restaurant or ordering food to go. The pad thai and chicken praram are light and delicious.
Food is delicious. Environment allows one to feel they are in Thailand. Service may take a while, as everything is prepared individually. Very cozy. Space a little on the tight side between tables. Can be very crowded on the weekends, sometimes with a line out the door, and parking may be a challenge on 4th Ave.
I tried to be daring and different by trying a new 'random' restaurant today, but failed miserably. Found this quaint little Thai place on 4th, and even though I was impressed by their lunch specials, I went for my basic pad thai (with pork). I got served some random noodles topped with veggies, that looked like they may have been stir fried...with chicken. I have no idea what I was served, but I can't complain about my order being incorrect because it was delicious! I ate the whole thing except for the cole slaw. Very vibrantly decorated, with quick as lightning service. The servers in their patterned dresses never neglected to keep refilling our water glasses. A fast and filling lunch alternative. So fast I even had time to visit Jamba Juice and Starbucks, and still make it back to the office early.
Always good, always fresh. I've never been disappointed with Thai Satay. The staff really hustles and even though it's often busy you never feel like you're left waiting. Some great lunch specials also. Sweet Basil Chicken is the dish I always order. The Salmon specials are also good.
The food is very good and the staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Thai Satay isn't quite a "hole in the wall", but it also isn't beautiful inside. I would describe it as modestly comfortable. But if you're looking for a tasty, affordable and pleasant Thai meal, I think it's the best in San Mateo. Anybody disagree?
