Trags has a nice personal appeal - good selection and quite reasonable prices, very good fresh produce, and an excellent deli section with a wide range of hot foods nicely displayed. The staff are very helpful and friendly and Trags just seems like a larger version of a small neighborhood market. It's an easy, comfortable place to shop.
I stroll into Trags about once a week, maybe two. Even though I don't consider myself a "regular", I am always greeted with a smile and a hello as if I have been shopping there for years. Trags has a great location in downtown San Mateo (a block from CalTrain), and the perfect place for everyday items or a fresh salad for lunch or dinner. Headed to the Giants game? Hit the deli and enjoy it on the train ride to the park. The chain stores (specifically Safeway) is always overcrowded, and I enjoy the intimate yet well-stocked selection at Trags. If I need a specialty item not carried at Trags, they are more than happy to refer me to other local shops that may carry it. They really get the customer service aspect, which in today's go-go-go world is really a refreshing change.
This is a lunchtime stop for me whenever I need something quick and healthy. No long lines and a great variety of lunch options. Well stocked salad bar, nice olive bar, great sandwiches and deli items and great hot food selection that changes daily. You can keep coming back and get something different each time. reasonable cost and on nice summer days it's great to take your lunch and sit in the park and enjoy the sun. My recommendation for a great change of pace lunch.
I have yet to really, really peruse through Trag's, but so far, what I see is impressive. A small market with a deep community feel, Trag's has a little bit of everything. The basics, really, with very competitive prices. But it seems like they also carry really nice speciality culinary items -- spices, etc. -- and a small but really fresh butcher counter. And the customer service alone is 5-star caliber. I look forward to taking time to cruise through!
My wife goes out of her way to buy meat and veggies at Trags. She can never say enough good things about the place. Because the store is so small, they have a smaller selection than Safeway. But they have their share of interesting and hard-to-find foods. But now that I am working downtown, I had a chance to check out the deli. They have a HUGE selection of ready-to-eat foods, including salalds, soups, and SUSHI. The sandwich I had was decent. While I was waiting for the sandwich I checked out the other food for the next time! I'll be back! The bad part is once you get your food, you have to wait in line at the checkstand to pay for it.
Great find at the south side of B Street. This market is ultra convenient with its self-serve salad bar and deli, but that's not why I love it. Their fruit selection is always wonderful and I like the layout much better than Draeger's. Instead of circling around huge islands and weirdly partitioned areas, Trag's is slightly more diminuitive and it's much easier to zip quickly through the store if you know where everything is. Thanks for the convenience!
I'm so happy that I finally set foot in this wonderful market because I will be coming here much more often to get lunch to go. I looove salad bars with a passion because they give you control over portions and toppings! I was able to just grab some soup (clam chowder, super tasty) and serve myself a salad. I will need to come back another time to see what else is in 'store.' I've heard many good things about their deli and will be back for more.
Trag's deli is superb. Great salad bar and hot food selection. If you're looking for someplace quick to pick up a healthy lunch this is the place. I'm trying to improve my diet. No more fast food. But I'm the type that wants to eat right now when I'm hungry and I'm always on the go. I can stop in here and get in and out in a minute and the hot food menu is always changing so I never have to have the same thing time and again. And with the weather so nice I'd rather grab something and spend my lunchtime in the park enjoying the sun.
This gem of a small neigbourhood grocery thrives on mediterranean hospitality. Close knit family (The Trags) go out of their way to keep customers satisfied and try to meet every demand for anything. They'll get you (almost) anything if you get them. You go back for the service.
I'm watching my weight and sometimes I just want something as simple as a grilled chicken breast and some vegetables. I was in Tragg's the other day buying fruit and wandered over to their deli section and discovered their great salad bar and hot food selection. They had meatloaf and pasta and ribs but what was perfect for me was the grilled lemon herb chicken breast and the mushrooms with peppers and sesame. I was able to serve myself and just get the portion size that I needed. Since you pay by the pound it's less incentive to load up your plate so that works well when you're dieting. The food was fresh and flavorful and I'm glad I’ve found someplace to go for healthy food that's faster than fattening fast food - my usual downfall.
I work in downtown San Mateo and use this market to pick up things after work. The staff is friendly. They have a nice selection of ethnic food. They are the best price in town for my favorite bagels, Western Alternative Bagels
I've been shopping at Trag's for nearly 5 years because the butchers & staff at the deli always meet my needs, from simple foods for my family to Thanksgiving dinner. The staff know me and my kids by name. They are very friendly - not just to me, but to all of their customers. Experience quality grocery shopping without Draeger's prices!
I love this small grocery store - they always have really fresh produce and have a great meat section with nice and helpful butchers. It has the real small town feeling unlike a lot of the giant grocery chains. And they just finished an update to their deli which includes a great salad bar & hot food self-serve section.
