We stopped by for a slice of pie and ended up disappointed with the lack of service. I never did get a refill of the mediocre coffee. Bummer because I wanted a new go-to place for a piece of pie. Guess we keep looking...not such a bad thing, I guess!
Everyone knows that this is THE late night dining spot on the Peninsula, but ony if you're in the mood for the greasy-spoon version. If you can skip dinner, head straight for the desserts -- yummy pies that will keep your tummy happy well into the wee hours of the morning. As for late night bites... I'm curious to know what other night owls recommend?
If you are like me and have a weakness for pie then Heidi's should be on your speed dial. I have to say that the food is good, but the pies are as if some sort of magical being placed them into an oven and baked small miracles into each and every pie...
Follow the bear!!!
This restaurant is not just a pie restaurant, but one of the best places value-wise for breakfast. They serve you a good helping of breakfast food and the quality is good. Try their traditional pancakes, eggs, and bacon breakfast...it stacks up as well as the best. But, of course, there are the pies. They are all good, except the key lime pie is to lime green. Odd, but it doesn't look real. Try their peach and apple. It's the best available. As good as mom's!
I don't have a lot to add, just wanted to chime in as a local who is a regular Heidi's visitor. The staff is great! They make you feel welcome every time you come in, and they provide great service.
It's a good, solid diner atmosphere, great breakfasts and pies. Cherry and boysenberry are our favorites.
Everybody knows Heidi's is the place for pies in San Mateo. They're a long time community mainstay, but I think they're a great place for that important first meal of the day - breakfast. I love breakfast and I know I'll always get great crunchy hash browns, eggs cooked to perfection and a friendly staff of familiar faces to serve me who make me feel like family. Why go anywhere else? And you can always get a slice of pie "to go" to eat later. :-)
I have yet to actually dine here in-person because I am so fortunate to have people who love me enough to bring me pies. I've already had the blueberry sour cream, apple, and peach pies and I can't wait to try more. My childhood favorite has always been the banana cream pie and I think I will need to pick one up after my best friend's wedding next week. I love pies and now after looking at their legendary dinners on their Webcard, I must try their chicken friend steak!! Love comfort food and cozy diners.
A co-worker brought one of Heidi's peach pies into the office today. To be honest, it didn't look all that different from a normal peach pie, but the taste was a huge surprise packed with full flavored peach goodness!!! Wow! If the rest of their pies live up to this one, my diet is in big trouble.
Heidi's is a great place to go any time with friends to sit and talk and enjoy pie and coffee. But I like to buy a whole cherry pie, take it home, and have a slice with some chocolate Haagen Dazs. Yum!
I never had a coconut pie until my experience at Heidi's Pies. Truly Delicious! I definitely recommend this place to anyone that likes pies. Even if you haven’t liked pies in the past, you may get turned onto pies after eating here.
The beauty of Heidi's Pies is not the fact that they are open till all hours of the night, nor is it the fantabulas selection of pies, no it is the Ruben. This establishment has the best sandwich in the land.
My family loves Heidi's Pies. It's been there on El Camino forever and you know what you're going to get. Decent food, reasonable prices and they are open late!
On your way home from the airport, after a night out playing and you need some "real" food & coffee... Heidi's is the place. I suggest Blackberry Ala Mode!! There salads are good, and I love any place that has chicken fried steak on the menu. Yummy. Right off the 92 and El Camino South turnoff, make a uturn and pray for a parking space. They are popular!!!
I never knew I liked pies, until I had a piece of apple pie from Heidi's Pies. I always thought pies were sloppy pastries that are gooey and way too sweet for my tastebuds. For some cosmic reason, Heidi's pies are amazing! Simply delicious. Flavorful. Not too sweet, which is always my prerequisite for desserts. And the crust was flaky and delicious on its own. I will definitely be swinging by to pick up some pies for my roommates. As if they aren't already well-fed enough from Sibby's cupcakes. Another culinary delight in town! Pies and cupcakes...what a thought.
I don't like pies but the apple pie from Heidi's Pies got me hooked. It was so perfectly done I couldn't help eating one piece after another, until my friends gave me dirty looks. The crust was perfectly done. The stuffing melted in mouth. The pie didn't taste like it was loaded with sugar. So for those of you who are health-conscious you don't have to feel guilty at all! No wonder this San Mateo restaurant and bakery has been a local favorite.
I love pie and Heidi's makes it so convenient because it's so close. The whole pies here are $9 or so, and they're a hit at parties. My favorite is the banana cream pie, but I've tried several others including apple, strawberry and pumpkin, which have all been good as well.
Heidi's is open 24-hours, so if you're ever jonesing for some pie at 9 or 10, after your dinner has settled, Heidi's is the place to go.
Heidi's Pies is famous among San Mateans, my friends love this place. They crave the pies, yesterday I heard them chanting about blueberry w/ sour cream and another unique pie concoction. I too would choose this place over the competition of Denny's anyday.
They do have old table and decor, but would it matter if you feel heavenly after taking a bite out of their pies? If you don't get the pie here, then I don't know you. But besides the pies, they're a diner style with burgers, fries, you know.
They are also open 24 hours, so when you have the craving for something sweet, you can get it anytime. Plus you can support the local businesses, I see too many of them close down, like Ma Pinkies and Prince of Wales. I much rather see these than another or TGI, nasty Denny's or poser Quickly (crappy), because you'll feel crappy real quickly after having food at Quickly, lame.
There aren't many places you can go in San Mateo for a good meal late at night, but Heidi's Pies is one of them. The menu is classic American Diner, but you are assured of getting a good meal and a great piece of pie served with a smile from the friendly waitstaff. Location is great right at El Camino and 92. You know you're going to a family diner and you get what you would expect. Avoid the chain restaurants and go to Heidi's.
YUM YUM! Chocolate creame pie with sprinkles, classic apple, and gooey berry pies, what more can I say!!! Heidi's has a homey atmosphere and has donated to my high school's annual charity event Adopt an Angel two times. (10 pies!!! both times) So Generous!
I have mixed feelings for Heidi's Pies.
First of all, I LOVE that they are always open--it's rare for this area. Secondly, I'm a big fan of the strawberry-rhubarb pie.
However, the service is poor, at least to teenagers. I was sitting with a group of friends--we all ordered something, and a friend of mine was in the middle of taking a bit of his ice cream (that was about half-finished) when the waitress reached over and cleared it from the table.
Perhaps she didn't notice, so I still recommend the place.
I went to Heidi's pie late one night with a group of friends. We wated for 20 minutes to get a table, and when we were seated they didnt come serve us for another twenty minutes. The pies were good, but the lady serving us was not. She took our food away before we had finished and didnt care at all about what we wanted. It is a good restaurant, but not worth going there for the horrible service.
this diner has all sorts of pies you would fall in love with. my favorite is the blueberry sourcream pie which is refreshing and not too sweet. the price is also good.
