It looks like the thing to eat at Taqueria La Cumbre is one of their plated meals or anything with enchiladas. My friends each dined on those and they looked fantastic. Good salsa, too. The guacamole and burritos, however, were subpar. The guac looked like it came out of a condiment squeeze bottle. And the burritos were engulfed in a giant, steering-wheel sized tortilla, and the goodies inside were minimal. In San Mateo, both Tres Amigos and and Pancho Villa (my fave) yield better in this department.
There are multiple taquerias in San Mateo, but I believe that none of them have anything on La Cumbre, not even Pancho Villa. Not only does The Hilltop have a mechanical pony that no longer works out in front, but it also makes traditional Mexican comida that is super hip... and they sell t-shirts, how could you go wrong.
I hadn't been to this restaurant for a very long time, and with the outstanding weather, just had to eat outdoors. A burrito, in all of its juicy glory, beckoned. What a disappointment. Overcooked meat, too-dry toritilla and re-re-re-heated pinto beans made for a troublesome trifecta. Maybe I should have ordered a six-pack to go with it. Of course, palates differ. But I'm sure that everyone would agree on the joy of sinking your teeth into a moist, flavorful wrap of goodness. And this time, there was no TLC in my TLC burrito. The search continues...
I love this place. On multiple occasions I've had great good. They have the best chicken around, the salsa is great, and the service is fast. It's great for a quick lunch where the focus is the food. I love it all, but I've had better guacamole.
I have seen the commercials on TV and had an entirely different image of the place. So my first impression was to cut-and-run! But my friend said this was his son's favorite burrito place. The burrito I had was not as good as Taqueria Sinaloense on 25th Avenue, but they made it quickly. My friend had a HUGE combination plate and ate every bit. He eyed the "guacamole" suspiciously because it looked fake. But the place is close to my work and so Iwill go back...for takeout.
This place makes me want to eat burritos all the time, quite possibly 3 meals a day. I usually love meaty burritos chock full of carne asada, but I took a chance and ordered a halibut burrito, with pinto beans and no rice. Their halibut was seasoned to perfection and generously dispersed throughout my burrito. The salsa was caliente as promised. Love it.
I don't usually eat burritos because my stomach can't handle all the stuff that's mixed in. But when I feel like it, I stop in at La Cumbre. The meats have loads of flavor and the fixins are pretty good. All the folks I've brought here have said good things after their burrito experience. I've been coming here since my high school days, and will keep coming. A must try, much better than 3 amigos.
It's located right next to downtown train station in San Mateo. Better than ANY downtown san mateo taquerias. Low maintenance environment to keep costs down. $6 for a foot of perfection!
Everytime I try a new Mexican restaurant, I deem it the 'next best burrito place.' Now, I can grace Taqueria la Cumbre with the title 'best fajita burrito!' Burritos made to order steaming hot right in front of you. Go early and expect a line, but an efficient one. Loiter by the salsa bar while you wait. When your burrito is ready, you should be prepared for an avalanche of flavor and an explosion of meat. I loved all the fresh grilled veggies and promptly finished my burrito first even though I got my food last while dining with a group of guys. That just goes to show, this girl loves her food.
What is up with the dirty floor and the crammed tables and stools? They don't match up with the tasty food. I'd give the food 3 stars, because it is generally acceptable, with plenty of flavor and portion. The meat in the burritos I ordered was a little too dry. That was my only complaint. But I had to give one star to the ambience of the restaurant. It is located in a prime location, right across Trag's and the Caltrain station, so it could definitely have been better.
A solid bet - usually crowded at lunch, but they have some nice tables outside which is great in the summertime
La Cumbre used to be one of our favorite mexican food diners. Sometimes we would eat in and most often take home. Lately, we have been very discouraged by their level of cleanliness. The place always seems so dirty and unsanitary. We have moved on because of this. I wish they would clean up their act. My daughter misses the bean burritos.
They're fast, easy to find parking, and good mexican food for a great deal. Try their Picante Salmon dish...it's great.
Great burritos, friendly staff - easy, inexpensive dinner when you don't have much time.
Best take out Burritos in San Mateo
This gem in San Mateo turns out the best burritos by far. The chicken and steak burritos are addictive. The chicken and beef burritos are both delicious. Flavors are balanced and spice is right on.
Still one of the better places to go in San Mateo for burritos and other hispanic food. Their stuff just taste better than say Pancho. I recommend this place for the burrito lover. They've recieved many awards over the years. Including a best of from The Guardian. Whoa.
This is one of my favorite Mexican places around. They have awesome salsas and their burritos are delicious (and huge!) A great stop in the summer to enjoy the outdoor seating.
